I am inept at the art of searching and came up with near nothing for the NULA rifles. I am considering a NULA and know that they are a great rifle in the .243-30-06 range, but I want a 300 or 338 Win Mag, and this rifle is light. Does anyone have one? Can I see pictures? How punishing is it? How is it grouping, as I would think this think would jump outta the bags like it's been stung.
I appreciate all your replys.

This search function works real good.....

Type in NULA and you should get some hits. (credit to Steelhead for the link)

R338W,

I asked Melvin Forbes in one conversation about who had him build what on the actions suitable for larger cartridges. He built a .416 Improved on the M40 action for Ross Seyfried, and very few others. He said that recoil and muzzle blast limit usability. The M32 works for .375 H&H or .300 Weatherby with a 26" #3 barrel.

John Barsness has shot a .300 Win Mag NULA and written about it, and I expect a .338 Win Mag would be similar.

My M24 is a .30-'06 and I shoot 180 gr loads from it without noticing recoil. Melvin says all his rifles shoot. wink

I have a M77 Ruger tang safety rifle in .250-3000, and making up one in a NULA would work very well. Lots of .257 Rs out there too.

I've got a NULA in 250 Savage, and it is a true sweetie. But it is left handed in case you were planning on dropping by my house when no one was home.(grins)

All of my NULA's have a #3 barrel, except the 250 Savage. It shoots and carries like a dream, and likes about any load.

So call Melvin and order one. See if you can get it by the deer season.

I have a couple NULA's of which one is a 300 Win Mag which has a removable muzzle brake. I purchased used from AK. I prefer to shoot without the muzzle brake, just too loud for me even with plugs and muffs. I have become use to full tilt loads with 200 grain bullets even off the bench.
Melvin's stock design does soak up some recoil which I can vouch for. Yes there is some muzzle jump, however, I find the recoil is more backwards than a muzzle uplifting.
You can PM if you have any more direct questions.

Why as a matter of fact 7x57STEVE, I am left handed.
After owning two Savage 110s in 250Sav, I finally picked
up a Remington 700 Classic last month. Maybe when money
gets a little better I'll give NULA a call.

Jericho,
Good on you for being left handed. And I'm not leaving my house for a while.

Man, still thinking one of Melvin's rigs in a 257 would be hella cool.

Problem with a NULA in 257 Bob or AI would be that then I'd have to give up my grand illusions of some fabled "ideal hunting rifle" which dwells "right over the horizon" and hunt with it for the rest of my life.

Ok maybe not.

I do dream of a NULA in 257 someday though...

A NULA in 338 though? Holy heck, that would be more like a nightmare...

A 300 WM ULA I picked up used.

Its a handful, but it doesn't seem to hit me any harder than my 12.5 lb 300 WM.All up, this thing is just a touch over 7 lb.
Its a challange to shoot as accurate as I would like. But it does shoot very well if you practice and take the time to get used to it.
To my mind NULA screams 6.5/284.The action was set up for the 284 case to begin with.Instead of stuffing it into a SA M700.
Its only money.Build two.

A friend of mine just picked up a Kimber Montana in .338,I've had it to the range, and for me it was UNPLEASANT to shoot! It made my 8mmMag look like a pussycat.I can only imagine what a NULA .338 would feel like!I'd draw the line at .300WM Drew! Monashee

I have 3 ULA Model 20s in 250 AI, 260Rem and 7x57AI. Mel's stock design is such that the recoil, while sharp, is not particularly offensive. Of course, none of these cartridges are monsters, though the 7mmAI has a case capacity almost identical to the .284Win. As much as I love them, I've been thinning the herd and I'm left with the Models 20s, which are my favorite actions in a ULA.

Have you considered a 338-06? That carrys most of the punch of the Win Mag... according to the Hodgdon load manual I think its something like 150 fps on a 200 gr Interlock?

You know, I have. The issue is I plan on travelling to hunt in the future and I will not buy Weatherby Norma Brass at $1 a pop once fired just to have brass match my rifle to avoid import export hassles.
But it is still a thought wink
