I'm gonna try this again and see if it works:

Previously, I posted some of lower antelope and upper antelope canyons. Rattlesnake is the last one in the series.

This one is really just a little side-canyon along the wash leading to Upper Antelope. It's only about 100yds long and 30' high.

This little eddy is only about 8 inches off the ground so I inverted my tripod and hoped for the best.

[Linked Image]

I didn't notice until later but there's another of these eddies -- 25 feet up shocked

[Linked Image]

and a third one in the other canyon 70 feet up eek

[Linked Image]

the other thing that was immediately apparent was the huge piles of sand everywhere from the recent storm

[Linked Image]

hard to get out of here quickly:

especially with the obstacles:

not a ton of opportunity in such a short stretch - but I really liked the textures. very rough - and eroding quickly

hopefully these load okay and don't gack anyone's computer.... thanks for looking!

Note to self... don't open any more of Lefty's threads, you'll only feel less of yourself as a photographer...

Very nice Matt. I *almost* wish I lived there! smile In the first pic - was that just an 8" high pocket?

Do you have a pic of the opening?

it was, Mike - or there abouts. just a little shelf. I totally missed it but my Navajo "guide" pointed it out. had to do some maneuvering to get down there - and it took a 15 sec exposure to get what you see. next time I have my laptop up, I'll look for a pull-back. there's a chance I caught it on a pass-through shot.

HBB - the storm deepened the canyon a foot or so -- no snakes seen....

trouble is Mike, there's not much around there (hour or so) unless you like swimming in Lake Powell. if you're thinking of it, I'd highly recommend trying to get "wave" permits (Vermillion cliffs) for the time you're coming -- they draw 4 months in advance so you'll know.

then you could do a "border tour" with several cool hotspots to see.

otherwise, I'd plan around Zion. Page is an hour or two away.

if you've been there, I'd try to plan to see/camp around monument valley, etc and see the GC too.

alternatively, Hole-in-the-rock road is a little north and has more along it's 30 mile stretch than you could see in a lifetime....

seriously, these canyons are 400yds,200yds,100yds long. if you're not into photography you'll need other things to see.

Reminds me of the time te pony stood up in the barn yard to give a speech.....

as he cleared his throat, he said, "You'll have to excuse me, but I'm a little horse!"

smile

grin they say the first step is to admit it

far side: touches the ground

near side: 8-10" off the ground

context: a 3 foot outcropping of the wall of the canyon in the path of the water flow

water swirls around under there plus it stays damp (or at least as damp as you get in the desert). that allows some algae to grow, staining the rock in the grooves the water cut.

over time, this "swirl" will get "taller" as the floor gets washed away - see other pics. ( a good storm will deepen these canyons 1-4 feet )

I'm afraid I've failed as a photog if I have to "explain" my pic. sorry....
