I found one in "very good" condition at Amazon for 4 US bucks (shipping was 2x that -- I am in Sweden).

I placed my order! Thanks for the info about the book!

Hey, I resemble that remark! smile

I almost bought the $1.09 copy in "used -- acceptable" condition, but I thought I'd go wild and get the more expensive copy in better condition because I was already spending twice the price on shipping! smile

Buying cheap used books from the Internet is addictive!

I have also done the same by wrapping around a stick and
leaning it over the fire to bake. I have heard some call it
bannock (sp) I have done fish and fowl by wrapping in clay
and placing under the fire to cook. No pots or pans!!!

I've never tried it wrapped around a stick, heard the boy scouts do it that way, though. I've always heated up the cast iron skillet and sizzled it in bacon grease. The recipe calls for no shortening or grease at all, never done it that way either.

real back pack campers don't carry a heavy skillet. grin
I portion the Bisquick in a baggie. In the field, I add the water, mix in the bag, and go from there.

Come on, I'd love to see you hiking along with about 4 or 5 cast iron skillets hanging from your backpack. LOL

Hey medicman, your post reminded me of my Grandma, and how that when I visit with cousins about our youth, we don't talk so much about running trucks in ditches or indiscriminate shooting. We visit about the smells of Grandma's house with 15-25 people for afternoon dinner every Sunday. Her hiding the Circus Peanuts in the bottom of the cabinet for us, her strawberry preserves, and home made ice cream. Hand pumps, screen doors, and out houses.

Thanks all for the recipes and history. My daughter and I are headed to the ranch this weekend for some pig hunting, fishing and eating. I will give the bread a try.

When I was a lad we used to go into the pig pen where the sows with piglets were kept. We woul grab a piglet and try to get out before the sow caught us. That is the only pig hunting I have done, and using a rifle or bow makes more sense. Good luck on the hunt with your daughterm and enjoy the bread

bp,

the wife has made biscuits in the skillet for us on camping trips. basically she puts them in a hot skillet over either the campfire or a camp stove and turns them as is needed. She has done this with both home made biscuits and canned ones. tom

My copy of the book arrived in Sweden.

Good book -- I have made a couple of the recipes and they were very good.

Lots of practical advice for camping, cooking on the trail, etc. too, some of which I did know, but I did learn some things (and I am only part way through the book).

Very much worth the (tiny!) price.

I need to buy a copy. On Amazon.com it appears you have to register credit card? Can't send a USPS MO?

sse you are too kind. You want that in cash? grin Thanks for the other links. Amazon wants the buyer to register their CC but would rather you get one of theirs. I just had to cancel one CC due to bank security being breached. The internet crime crap is getting old....

Here's a recipe published by a Tahltan friend (Louise Framst (nee: Edzerza), in "A Tahltan Cookbook":

She refers to it as bannock in the book but frequently called it fry bread at home when cooked in that manner.
Qoute:
5 C flour
4-5 t baking powder
1/2 t salt
1/3 C sugar.

Mix ingredients and add enough water to make a thick, heavy batter. Fry in hot oil until golden brown. Unqoute.

It varies from the original trail bannock by the addition of sugar but that makes it better to my taste.

There are at least 2 volumes of her books, worth having in my opinion.

Any one interested can probably still acquire them from;
