I just recently got a pof 415 6.8 spc which is my first AR and I'm still ramping up my learning curve on these types of weapons. I'm considering getting another AR and already have several 308 bolt actions and have been wanting to get a 338 Federal for quite some time.

I'm thinking I have 2 options for getting what I want done on an AR platform. Purchase an Armalite or DPMS already chambered in 338 and outfit the stocks and rails to look more like the POF. I still wouldn't have the POF internals but would certainly save some money.

Or purchase a POF in 308 and have it rebarreled. If I go this route, what barrel makers will make 338 federal barrel for ARs and with ARs is this simple do it yourself barrel change or are there safety/gunsmithing issues like barrel changes on bolt action style rifles?

Not sure of the POF (piston gun?) but AR-10's the barrel can be changed with 2 hardwood blocks in a vice and an armorers wrench. The barrel extension is prefit in the barrel and headspace is already set, provided you have an in spec bolt.

Buying one already so chambered would be a better start, adding rails and such is no problem.

Yes, the POF is a gas piston system.

They should be about the same as a DI gun but I have no experience with them.

338 or 358 is on my AR10 type list. but 260AI will probably get the first shot....
