Would not be my first choice, though with judicious handloads and proper bullets Ive shot elk-sized African game with one...so yeah...it can be done. Tons of elk have been killed with a .30-30, also not first choice, but power level is similar, and Ive done that myself..... As Clint said.." A man's got to know his limitations..." Ingwe

It is an adequate elk round. A few zillion elk have been shot with .303's in Canada. Don't shoot them in the butt, and use 180's not 150's. Most everybody my Dad's age around here shot their first elk with a .303. Anything written about the .308 would apply to the .303 imho.

The .303 is a little more than a .30-30 and a little less than a .308. Use good bullets and have at 'er.

Agree with the above. 180 grain Corelokts are fine out to 200 yards. More if you are an excelent shot.

I am certain there are more than a few Elk that have dropped due to connecting with a .303. One of my buddy's Father uses a .303 as his got rifle, for last 50 years.......he has bagged a large number with the Enfield .303

The 303 Brit is a very underrated round for big game. It has been widely use all over the world to take all type of game animals from Africa to Canada , US just to name a few. It will be more than enough for Elk if you shoot straight and do your part.

My Grandpa's favorite elk rifle was a 30-40 Krag. The 303 and the Krag are very similar so it shouldn't be a problem.

More elk and moose have been killed in Canada in the past 100 years with the .303 than all of the other calibers combined. Use 180's, keep your shots under 200 yards...it will do what you need it to do.

And don't forget the larger diameter bullet--.310 will leave a larger hole than a standard .308 bullet does so you will have a better blood trail !

Hundreds of thousands of Wapiti (Elk) and Red Deer have been shot in New Zealand with the .303 Brit, probably more than all the other calibres put together. It's plenty of gun for the job.
