Hey guys I was wondering if there was still any decent hunting near Durango, Colorado. My dad said that him and his buddies used to hunt this area back in the 80's but he hasnt been back since. Not planning on a hnt or anything but thought I would check for nostalgia reasons.

If someone is hunting near Durango, they are probably hunting in units 74 or 75. There are a few PLO deer tags left over and a bunch of left over elk tags for units 74 & 75.
Where there are leftover tags, the game populations are above management objectives and there are not enough applicants to issue all the tags. You can draw your own conclusions from that.

The hunting isn't bad at all, but all the southwest and south central units are pretty popular.

Sorry if I am hijacking this thread. There are 4 of us that will be hunting Unit 741 for the second season. We are looking for affordable lodging and having a tough time. Looking to rent a modest house or cabin that will be around 20 minutes + or - from Redmesa. I have done intenet searches until I am blue in the face, but not much luck. Our budget is around $1200 for 7-8 nights. Can anyone here offer suggestions?

Most people camp in the hunting grounds. Maybe you don't have the camping gear or skills for that? Or maybe you just don't want to go rustic. You could rent a small trailer and park it close to your hunting grounds. This makes for an easy camp with a kitchen ready to go and sleeping space for a couple of people inside the trailer. Maybe setup a tent or two outside the trailer to increase sleeping space. Here's a place in Denver that rents travel trailers. http://www.greatoutdoorrentalsinc.com/rates_models.html You could drive your pickup to Denver, rent a trailer and drive it to Durango KOA. OR They even rent motor homes for $1,100/week. You could fly to Denver, rent a motor home and drive it to Durango. I've hunted out of a cabin that I own near some good elk hunting. But still we spent a lot of time driving to and from the good places to start hunting. So I prefer to camp right there. KC
