I have a Remington Mountain Guide 243 stainless (Mtn rifle in Ti stock). Don't really have much need for the lightweight 243 so thinking of screwing on a new tube, mic .625 at 21" and chambered in 358 Win.

I am partial to the 338Fed but a 358Win is good too. It sounds like a great plan.

Figuring since I already have several 35 caliber rifles and no 338, it would make logistics just that much easier.

Sounds neat.

I prefer a little more muzzle heavy feel so I'd probably go .675 which would be about like a Lilja #3 lopped off at 21". It will have a .358" hole in it after all.

Makes sense. I had a lot of 338 bullets laying around when I had to decide between the two. It was the main reason I went with the Fed.

Have always been tempted by the 358 and then consequently wonder about the thumping thing.

It would make nicer hole in a fat black bear than a 243.

Did ponder the 358 and 338 on a 57 case for my Mex...

Would like a little more than .621 too, on the end...just for the appearance...heavier tube, big hole...liking the looks of those 760s with a short heavy tubes at 20-21".

Sounds good. You've had that 243 a couple of months now anyhoo, time to rip it apart!

Your dimensions sound good. My Norma mikes .635" at 23" with a M70 action and standard fill McMillan. Since your stock and action are both lighter than mine it should be good. For balance I think you've got it.

Anybody who seriously concerns themselves with the adequacy of a Big 7mm for anything we hunt here short of brown bear, is a dufus. They are mostly making shidt up. Crunch! Nite-nite!

I've been getting together the parts for pretty much the same rifle, except the action is not a TI.

A faux TI in 358 (22") with 2x7 Leupold would be a great rig.

dont know why you dont just go with the 325 wsm ! That way you have the best of all worlds ! It was made for a shorter barrel in the first place ! And i know it will thump the way you wont !!!

Having a .358 is a lot better than having a .243, though that can be said about nearly any cartridge grin.

The rifle you describe sounds right, and would be dandy to go with the rest of them. Though if I were doing it the .338 Fed would be very appealing to me...

I like that idea a lot! A wee thicker at the end of the tube wouldn't suck either.

21" tube seems about perfect.

I'd be looking to punch that 243 chamber AI and roll with it. But that's just me. (grin)
