Just found out I drew a muzzleloader deer tag here. Looks like I'm going to see some mulies. Anybody ever hunt there? I'd appreciate an info that anyone has. Thanks
Wide open out in that part of the state. What town are you hunting close to? I've never hunted unit 1, all my deer come out of unit 13 where I live. There should be some nice bucks out that way. Here is a nice unit 13 buck my brother-in-law shot last year.
the wife & I hunted unit 2 in 02, with a muzz and seen a lot of deer, hold out for a good one.are you a nonres. & how many preferance points did it take to draw?I passed on several bucks and ate my tag, but my wife shot a nice buck.
Don't even know which town I'll be near yet. I knew that it would have to be wide open high prairie, judging by how things looked on the map. . This is my third year of trying to draw so I guess I had three preference points. I'm kind of pumped up even at this early stage of the game. I'm under the impression that this area has a predominate amount of mule deer as opposed to whitetail. Would my assumption be correct? Yes I am a nonres. Good day.
Unit 1 from the intersection of I-70 and US283, is north to Nebraska line and west to Colorado line.
I would think there would be both Whitetail and Mule Deer. I have not hunted there but it should be great. Are you planning on asking permission to hunt private land? Or is there some public land permits etc.?
Tags in Kansas are "any deer" or "whitetail only". Both muleys and whitetail live out there.
There is probably a little public land around Sebelius Reservoir, but not much. I would expect that land to be dominated by whitetails as well. Another option is WIHA lands--these are private lands leased by the state and open to all hunters. However, not all tracts are under lease during muzzleloader season and not all tracts allow firearms deer hunting. All the details are published in an "atlas" that should be coming out soon. It is also available on the website. These are good to have because they contain county road maps showing all the dirt and gravel roads. However, the program is primarily focused at providing opportunities for bird hunters--most of the tracts will be retired farm lands that are now enrolled in CRP. I've seen deer on them before, in other areas, but it might not be the kind of land you are looking for. Good luck and I hope you enjoy your hunt.
