I used one back in the early 90's a bit. Don't anymore, it'll do you just fine if that's what turns your crank.

With what you've got it's definately gonna be a want project and not a need project. Personally, I'd just put the project money in the bank and go on a hunt.

I know two guys that have used it. One rates it pretty much identical to his 358Norma, shooting 250gr pills in both. His x64 is a custom on a Mauser 98. Other used his to evaluate Woodleigh's range of 9.3 pills on water buffalo at 'advanced speeds' compared to the x62. He rates it pretty much as a 375H&H on buffalo.
Cheers...

Mine has taking some time to get built, Turnbull just finished it up with the rust bluing and charcoal bluing on the M98 1909 Arg...26"bbl. All metal work done by Stuart Satterlee. Parts from various vendors ie. Danny Pederson aka. Cutrifle, Jim Andersons bottom metals, Blackburn Trigger, Satterlees RH safety, Satterlee DBL.SQ. bridges w/Talley cuts, Dakota bolt I believe....feeds round nose and spitzers like butter. My gunsmith should have it in the next day or so and back to me for setting back in the stock and breaking in the bbl. Found a very nice Leupold M8 3X this past winter for the project too.

My first actual custom rifle, undertaking a project like this requires both money and patience....somthing I am always it seems short of..:)

My 9.3x62 has served me quite well on moose and grizz in the past yr....so this caliber should be that and then some. It would surprise me to be otherwise. I've a couple of boxes of 250 TSX to load for it but will break it in with the likes of the 285 Oryx....I believe there jackets are softer than my Partitions or the Barnes..could be wrong. Don't have any of them inexpensive Speer 270's I think they are..that would be ideal for breakin in the bbl.

If you have brass for this round and decide not to go this custom route then perhaps I can take the brass off of your hands.....there is brass around but in limited quantities.

If I can figure out how to post within the next week I will post a few pics of my rifle.

regards,

oh yea, nothing to really gain as the rifles you have will suffice just fine....it is a "want" type deal as noted above. My .338's have worked all the time as far as medium belts goes. remember "Cuique Suum"..to each his own.

I would buy a supply of brass before I started the project.

DWM 98 action, 22" barrel, Boberg Laminated stock

[Linked Image]

far right: 9,3x64 Brenneke, 286 gr. Barnes TSX @ 2450 fps from 22" barrel

[Linked Image]

View at bull moose through this rifles sights - a situateion it and the load would just have handled, had the bull been in season.

To me - this cartridge allows me to get real world 9,3x62 performance with the 286 gr. TSX from a short barrel. That is important to me.

With the 9,3x 62 you need the 250 gr. TSX and a quite longer tube to get any speed, due too the case capacity.

Dober, though has summarized it quite well, I think. Unless you are a 'conoseur' , those 62s, 338s, and 375s just will do the trick.

Only so many ways to slice a cake.

Rather go hunting, maybe.

I've built a custom wildcat 9.3 RUM which is a little hotter than the 9.3x64. I wanted more than a 338,340 but a little less than a 378 Weatherby. If I were to do it again I might consider a 9.3mm Ruger which could get you closer to 9.3mmx64. Just a thought.

I have built one that I put on the custom page not sure where the pics are right now. However, it was on a 700, douglas barrel (23"), mcmillan stock and 1x4 Leupold. It weighs 8.1 lbs complete and shoots phenominally well. I have loads for both 270 & 286 grain bullets. Testing 250's soon. I like the gun so much I am building a CRF version with a 21" barrel to use on Kodiak this spring.

If you are into common; there is no reason for it. If you are not; its great! I guess you can tell where I am at....

I built one and shot a few Cape buffalo with it and the 320 gr. Woodleigh..It worked well and recoil was right up there with a 375 H&H as one would expect it to be...

I used it a bit and went back the the 9.3x62 with a 26 inch tube as I could come within 75 FPS of the 9.3x64 with a good handload and RL-15 powder and 9.3x62 brass is much easier to come by and will be around a lot longer..

If I need a bit more power than the 9.3x62 then I will opt for a .375 H&H to better it and equal or surpass the 9.3x64, and the .416 Rem or .404 even better..That was my reasoning anyway..

I have a 9,3x74R in a Chapuis double which is probably my favorite big game rifle.
Used it on a moose last year and it worked perfectly.

I am looking into bringing in some 9.3X64 brass as I have a possible connection. If you need some (I thinking I might have some over the winter)I might be able to help you out. Just drop me a note and I will keep your details if it works out. I have no idea on price right now other than expensive.

If you have a 9.3x74, a 9.3x62 and a .338 then you have saturated the field...Your duplicating yourself times 3 and if you add a 9.3x64 you can make that times 4..

Why not go up a step with a .375 H&H or 375 Ruger?

As much as I like my 9.3x62 and my .338 Win., I think I would do well to sell them both and just use my .375 H&H or at least sell the 9.3x62 and keep the 338 and 375..The only advantage I see to a 9.3x62 is it will hold one more round in the magazine but its a tad less powerful than the .375 and won't shoot as flat as the .338..The problem is I really love the rifle itself.:)

Ray,thanks for the imput.I already have a P64 Win .375HH.The idea on the 9.3x64 came from a trade on some ammo.I have a Mauser or two sitting, got to thinking while drinking a little coffee.

With what I already have in my battery, there is absolutly no reason to build one, however I have a disease(Loonieisumm). It appears the short fix is to have another rifle....but I found another Mannlicher last week,so I'm OK for a month or so.
I am pulling the bullets on the x64 ammo and will have brass to sell shortly..

I for one would love to have my 9,3x62 rechambered to 9,3x64. But the issue stopping the project is brass is almost impossible to obtain.
Anyone know of a reasonable source for brass?

RCBS makes a form die using .338 Win as input. You have to turn off the belt and turn down the head but the supply is unlimited.

Nothing that others haven't said already, but Boddington says a lot of good about the caliber here:

http://www.gunsandammomag.com/cs/Satellite/IMO_GA/Story_C/A+Most+Marvelous+Metric?packedargs=pagenum%3D1

I'm personally a bit enamered w/ the x62...

x64 cases here for the bargain-basement price of $2.15/ea:

I would like one, but can't justify it right now as i have a x62.....maybe if i dump a few projects and little used rifles i will have a niche that needs filling. After reading about the Russians using the 9.3x64 as a long range sniper catridge I have wanted to build one as such. then it would give me a reason to give Corbin a call and start making VLD 9.3 bullets
