I've always used 160 gr Sierra game kings for deer in my 7mm stw. Now I've drawn a trophy elk area, will this bullet perform well on elk? I know there are better bullets out there but there aren't to many in stw factory loads.

It should work, but for a tough angled shot? For myself, I would choose a premium bullet, especially for elk and especially if I was drawn for a coveted unit. I've killed a few deer with that same bullet in the 7RM and friends use it for deer in their 7STWs. It is a bit fragile bullet at high velocities and tends to destroy alot of meat and come apart on bone. I'm sure someone out there makes at least a factory Nosler Partition for the 7STW? Maybe I'm wrong...................

Found a number of factory 7STW loads with premium bullets over at Midway. Buy a box of each and try em out. Choose one which shoots accurately in your rifle.

7STW Factory Loads

The A Frame, Accubond, Trophy Bonded or Failsafe all work great on big bull elk in the 7STW in weights from 140-160. A friend of mine has used the 160gr Failsafe in his 7RM with great results on elk.

I know Rem offers Swift A-frames in factory fodder. I think
you can get Nosler Partitions from Federal in thier premium
line. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

The game kings should work fine. I've been hunting roseavelt elk with 160 gr speer bt's out of a 7RM for years and have killed some nice bulls with them. I've never taken a texas heart shot at a elk but have had a few less than perfect shots and the elk have never went very far.

The Game Kings will work well enough if shot placement is good ( through the ribs), but if I were you, I would look for a bullet that is a little tougher. Partitions are hard to beat, but there are quite a few others out there to choose from. Good luck!

I have used them out of a 7 mag for elk,but finally switched to Nosler partitions. The game kings worked well in the 250-300 yd range, but sure exploded at 20 yds.I had my worst tracking job in my life with a 5x6 bull, hit with a game king angling towards me. It took out one lung, 3 ribs, but angled back into the paunch.

I wouldn' recommend a Sierra in a fast rifle like a 7 STW.

Use whatever premium bullet shoots out of your 7 STW in either a 150 or 160.

I had a 150BT out of my 7 STW blow up on a 90lb doe. I purposely loaded it down to 3000FPS. Shot was 100 yards, so it wasn't even a point blank shot. I know the 150 BT isn't a 160 Sierra, but their construction for the most part is the same.

Bottom line, I would not risk a highly sought after tag, and the time and expense of a hunt on a bullet that can perform marginally.

Get a 160 Partition load or something in the same performance league.

The Federal Vital Shok comes in a 160 grain Nosler Accubond and the Winchester Supreme comes in a 160 grain Fail Safe for the 7mm STW. Probably would be some insurance on quartering shots. Conley Ammunition loads the 7mm STW in a variety of 160 and 175 grain Barnes X-Bullets and some good 175 grain bullets, Nosler Partition and Swift A-Frame, which would probably be much more effective for all shots on elk.

goatboy,
Don't do it. You may regret the outcome. I've had game kings "come from un-together" at much lower velocities, with much heavier bullets, much larger caliber on much smaller game. And, that was with a BEHIND THE SHOULDER shot.
I don't even shoot paper with them. They start to open up, and make scoring your group harder!!!! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" /> -memtb

Thank you very much for all the insight!
I would like to shoot the 160 gr accubonds but they aren't out yet. And they only have the A frames in 140 gr, does anyone load the stw in the partition?

Thanks again very much
The tag I drew is a once in a lifetime tag and I mean that, I can never put in for the elk draw again in my life since I drew.
The #2 bull in the world came out of this unit a couple years ago went almost 450 nt, and there have been about a dozen 400 class bulls taken out of it the last couple years.

So wish me luck!

I just got three hundred 160 gr 7mm Accubonds. If they are available here, they must be in the lower 48!

Are you willing to risk your hunt for the few dollars difference between the game kings and a premium loading? I would not take the chance. As a matter of fact for a tag like you have I would leave nothing I could control to chance! There are too many other good bullets out there. Even if you have to get someone to load them for you. There are companies that will work up loads for you. Do some research and you should be able to find something in a premium. Good luck <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> 163bc
