I carry most of the stuff I need for quartering and hanging an elk with me. Saw, knife, rope, bags, water, food, and all of the stuff for spending the night.
I use the Black Creeks "Western" and my hunting buddy uses the "Canadian". The Canadian will fit a quarter and I can haul backstrap and tenderloin with other loose meat out on the first trip out. Next we switch to pack frames to go back and get the hanging meat. Both carry out a quarter then we go back for antlers and the last quarter. If we have help, the second trip does it all.
As far as backpacking in and setting a spike camp, we use old Jansport frame packs because they were cheap. Spent the money on good tent/shelters. What works good for us in the warm early season hunts is just mosquito netting and a tarp with a ground cloth for the sleeping bags. We have found that being able to travel as light as possiable is the only way to go for guys hitting 50 and over.
