Hi All,

I am considering said scope (GS 3-9x40) to put on a Winchester 70 featherwight in 243. First, let me say that I don't wnat to turn this into a scope bashing session. I typically have Leupolds or Conquests on my scoped guns, but am strongly considering giving this weaver a whirl on the .243. The shorter eye relief has always steered me away from the GS series, but on a .243 (my lightest centerfire) this should not be an issue.

So, my questions. Mainly due to the fact that the Weaver site and catalog contains very little in terms of actual data on these scope.

1. Approximately what is the ring spacing on the 3-9x40 scope?

2. What is the length of the eyepiece?

This question isn't really a "specs" question, but am wondering if anyone has put one on a Model 70 with low Talley one-piece Aluminum rings? Reason being is that I am also a little leery of the bolt handle hitting that big rubber power ring on the GS.

Thanks for any and all thought, opinions, and exeriences!

Bob

Hi
I just mounted a 3x10x40 on a browning Abolt with talley's no problem . I have mounted several 1.5x5 x32 on Remingtons with no problem without the bolt hitting . Your mileage may vary.

I have the scope on a A-bolt, short action, dual dovetail setup. I have no bad experiences with the mounting, been happy with the setup, and the scope has been a great value. I would think with a short action like the .243 there wouldn't be any problems. I've heard issues with long actions with certain setups, and then the long eye relief of Leupolds let you push the scope more forward to combat those problems. Recently, I have a friend that was working with a GS 4.75x40 on a Winchester .257 (long action) with spacing issues, took a 2.5-8x36 Leupold off another rifle, and the problem was solved.
If you have a normal to short length of pull, and a short action all should be fine with the shorter eye relief scopes.

I have the scope on a Rem 700 short action in low Warne Rings. No problems with ring spacing or clearing the bolt. I suspect you'll be fine if your 70 is a short action. The low Talley's seem to have a little extra clearance than other low rings. I've got a few Leupolds and a Conquest as well, but the Grand Slam is my favorite. Good luck!
