Does anyone know how many inches it takes for a 22lr to reach ~ 1050 fps?

Id like to end up with a M77/22 that has a barrel length between 16 - 18 to use with standard/sub-sonic ammo but dont want to make it so short that my already slow ammo doesnt reach its intended velocity. Thanks!!

Much appreciated! The shorter the better for me so it looks like I'll be going with a 16" barrel.....

The Colibri stuff is only rated for pistol barrels, I use a T/C 14" with a permanently mounted 2" brake, still very quiet.

There was a test some time ago, published in one of the gun mage, where they chrono'd 22LR and cut the barrel. As True notes, max velocity was at 14 inches, but 16 is the legal minimum unless you feel like paying $200 for a tax stamp. Modern high velocity stuff does better at 17-18 inches.

As an aside, 17HMR reaches max velocity at 19 inches. http://www.bullberry.com/HMRdata.html

Interestingly most of the top 22lr br shooters are using a 25" long barrel. I read a discussion on the benefits of that barrel length related to bullet velocity and group size, but can't seem to find a link.

There's a lot to consider here other than optimum velocity. Sight radius, balance, muzzle blast to name some of the more obvious. I've not fired a .22 RF whose accuracy suffered due to less than optimum velocity.
