I like mine, although I have to compensate because all my rifles I've used it with are 3"s to the right and 4"s low.

It's junk! I have used a crap load of bore sighters and this one sucks. It is inconsistent, a guessing game, and a waste of money.

Oh, and going back to your original post, it's especially useless for plotting zero.

Gee, Chuck, I've had pretty good luck with the two I've fooled with. They seem to work at least as well as my long-used traditional boresighter, and with less hassle, as I don't have to change arbors.

The owner of the local sporting goods store I bought it from sang it's praises as well. When I took it back we played with it for an hour or so in the store. He refunded my money and no longer carries the product. Maybe mine was a bad one, but it looks like not the only bad one.

DownUnder
Try this: first, if your scope is a variable, turn the power ring to the lowest magnification, second Leupold Magnetic sighters seem to be very sensitive to light exposure/reflexion (at least mine is), find the good angle and it should work for you. They are great little device, won't mare the rifling and will put you right on paper, they are cheap too.

Chuck--
Intertesting. I compared mine to the insert-type collimator I've used for over a decade and it worked just about as well, if I took some care to line it up reasonably well. And was at least as repeatable as the insert boresighter.
Unlike insert collimators, however, it does depend on an absolutely square muzzle to work correctly.

John, I love my Bushnell bore sighter with the adjustable arbors. If care is taken to set things up properly getting within a few clicks of final zero is a snap, and checking a pre plotted zero is simple and affective. I bought the Leupold, because it looked like a better idea, but was sorely disapointed. I have also used and owned a couple of versions of the laser down the bore sighters and was unimpressed with these as well.

Chuck--
Oddly enough, the Bushnell with adjustable arbors is exactly the model I compared the Leupold to. Can't explain our differences, though I did check two different Leupolds and got good results.
Is it hot up there too?

I have two of the Leupold magnetic bore sighters and both work as well as any bore sighter I've ever used. No, they aren't perfect, but they will get you on paper at 100 yards.
I bought the first one from a local wholesaler. The second was a table gift during a Leupold SHOT Show Luncheon a couple of years ago.
The luncheon was especially enjoyable because I was able to sit with John and Eileen. Great company always makes a meal better.
The crazy thing is I can't figure out how the Leupold magnetic bore sighter actually works. I mean, it's great that it works, but I'd like to know how. Not to be ethnic, but it's kind of like the Polish fella and the thermos bottle. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
Hotter than Hell, here in Portland. Temps in the mid-80s and the last few days have been hi-80s. Supposed to cool down during the next week. I've forgotten what rain looks like.

I, too, think the Leu tool is great. Quick, easy way to get a newly scoped rifle on paper without firing a shot. Sorry that others have had trouble but if I can make it work, anybody can. RS

I'm melting up here! Oddly enough, however, it has acted like it wanted to snow all day today. It's wonderful!

Leupold used to have something on their customer support page that explained it. I just looked and can't find it -- it had something to do with the rays of light changing direction after passing through the lens of the boresighter, then the lenses of the scope. But I was a B- guy in physics class, and that was a long time ago anyway. Mine works fine, even if I don't understand it. John
