Sorry for posting such a redundant post, but here goes.
I've simply run Swaroviski 10x42 EL's for the past 6 or 7 years to keep things simple, but a buddy of mine needs a pair of decent 10x42 roof prisms for under $400 (tough I know).
I'm out of the loop, so please give me some pointers.
I was thinking about the following:
Minox BD Bushnell Legend Nikon Monarch DCF Pentax DCF WP II Vortex Diamondback
Advice appreciated....thanks in advance.

Check the Cabelas website. They have Leupolds on sale at some very low prices. I just picked up the pinnacles and couldnt be happier.

These have been discussed so much that I almost hesitate to mention them, but the class of binoculars represented by the ZEN ED, Promaster Infinity Elite ELX ED, the Hawke Frontier ED, and the Atlas Intrepid can be had very close to the price your friend needs.
They are so close to the image of the alpha class, it will not be believed unless it is seen.
Talk about everything else at that price all you want, but nothing compares untill you get to very close to $1,000.

I love the vortex diamondbacks. (from Doug) I compared them to my Zeiss Classics last weekend in the Hill Country and there wasn't $550 difference in the view. But time will tell which one holds up to my rough use.
