Sorry for posting such a redundant post, but here goes.

I've simply run Swaroviski 10x42 EL's for the past 6 or 7 years to keep things simple, but a buddy of mine needs a pair of decent 10x42 roof prisms for under $400 (tough I know).

I'm out of the loop, so please give me some pointers.

I was thinking about the following:

Minox BD
Bushnell Legend
Nikon Monarch DCF
Pentax DCF WP II
Vortex Diamondback

Advice appreciated....thanks in advance.

Check the Cabelas website. They have Leupolds on sale at some very low prices. I just picked up the pinnacles and couldnt be happier.

These have been discussed so much that I almost hesitate to mention them, but the class of binoculars represented by the ZEN ED, Promaster Infinity Elite ELX ED, the Hawke Frontier ED, and the Atlas Intrepid can be had very close to the price your friend needs.

They are so close to the image of the alpha class, it will not be believed unless it is seen.

Talk about everything else at that price all you want, but nothing compares untill you get to very close to $1,000.

Out of that group the Minox BD or Pentax DCF WP II hands down. Under $400 consider ZEN ED, Atlas Optics Intrepid ED, Swift Audubon 8.5x44 porro, ProMaster Infinity Elite ELX ED, Hawke Frontier ED or the Celestron Regal LX in closeout.

got a promotion email this morning. there is 50% off on zen-ray summit 10x42 if you buy their ZEN ED binoculars. Seems to be an awesome deal.

I love the vortex diamondbacks. (from Doug) I compared them to my Zeiss Classics last weekend in the Hill Country and there wasn't $550 difference in the view. But time will tell which one holds up to my rough use.
