Looking for a decent range finder for what I do, mostly hunting areas where my shots are under 400yrds. For $269, the Nikon 800 seems to fit the bill here, anyone have experience with this unit?

I used one for a couple of years. It did perform well. I'm not a long rang shooter by any stretch. However, I would occasionally range something I couldn't get a reading on. It might have been due to sunshine, distance, reflectivity, whatever, I really don't know. Three years ago, a bud and I bought the 1200yd units. IIRC, they were $350 each. I haven't looked back. Both units are still using the original battery, and haven't failed to "measure up" yet. I would very strongly urge you to bite the bullet and get the better unit. It's not that much more, and you will never wish for a better rangefinder. At least until you get bit by the REALLY long range bug! HTH........Bug.

I borrowed a buddy's Bushnell 1000 w/ arc last year and it worked very well but I like the optics on the Nikon a little better. The 1200 isn't that much more and may be worth looking at. If I'm going to spend for the 1200, why not go for the Leica 900 for $429 from SWFA? Guess it never ends, does it? I was hoping to spend less than $300 but I usually get sucked into spending more.

I have that Nikon unit and a Leica LRF unit. Both work as advertised but the Leica is better at night and the Nikon works in the fog.

I used to have the nikon monarch 800, to me it sucked, that is after using a leica. the nikon would give inconsistent readings past about 425 on a deer, 425 is where you really start needing to know the range, also the optics sucked and were dim, I would save you money and try as hard as you can to get a leica, to me its the only unit that gets the job done, even look for a used leica, ranging a cedar tree at 1100yards or a coyote at 900, is the performance I demand.
