Getting the varmint fever and been watching videos. A lot of these guys tote a shotgun and rifle out.

How many of y'all do that?

A lightweight AR and my Xtrema2 would cover most of the bases, but that seems like a lot to hump into the woods and fields...

Bring a revolver too for those real close encounters. Might want to think about a bow to kill silently so you don't disturb the other critters.

I wouldnt want to carry that much around. The market is begging for a good .223/12ga combo gun. Getting one of the manufacturers to build a new firearm may be a little difficult. Maybe we could get Browning to put a .223 barrel on top in a Citori frame? What we need is a quality firearm, not some imported el-cheapo.

The old Savage 24F was such a combo gun. Only guys I know who carry both are TV hosts, like Les somebody who drives a free quarter million dollar truck/camping trailer and has his brother and crew carry it for him.

I have carried a drilling for decades. Its perfect for VT now with the bear season open and the bird season about to. That drilling has a long time of valuable use there in those hills.

There are no takebacks, in my view, of that drilling except price. Its light, handy, fast and powerfull. Its a Sauer with 24" barrels that weighs 7 lbs. in 16ga, and 8-57JR.

An over & under as mentioned above would do the trick but please not a tiny .223. We hunt with single shots and a O/U is two single shots!

I usually do. Mostly its a 22" 935 and my 22Mag or AR for a little more reach and precision. If I know terrain will be open I may leave the scatergun in the Jeep.

DVD I was watching was a couple guys that won the national coyote calling championship more than once.

Seventeen coyotes in two days to win in 2007, so they ain't just woofin.

Both have Benelli turkey guns as backups to their .204 and .22/250. Transition to SG for sudden close range dogs, or followups on runners.

Maybe it's just marketing, but the primary problem seems to me is too much to carry.

My ace in the hole is a strong 15-year-old son to carry the shotgun Once he goes mobile and starts chasing women full time, however, I may have to get a cart...

Oh, I also have an 870 with a 21-in. RC bbl that is a bit more wieldy than the 28-in. Beretta with Surecycle extended mag; 10 3-in BB loads in reserve is nice, though.

Just in case 'coon/coyote/'cat cong overrun my position and don't have time to call Broken Arrow. grin

Well, lets see, I carry a stool to sit on, electronic caller, rifle.

I'll need another hand.

In the late 70's, I did carry a rifle and shotgun. It seemed like I never had the right one in my hand.

With your AR, I don't think that you will need a shotgun.

Good luck!

I carry both...

It all depends on the situation but a partner is much better than carrying both.

That said, if I'm single, I'll carry a scattergun and a rifle...

The ability for a fast follow-up shot is not the reason to carry a shotgun over just a rifle. I'm assuming this is what you meant...

I sometimes carry a shot gun in a Nimrod back scabard, it's a light weight 20ga and swap guns on the way back from coyote stands to hunt birds. My dog walks to the stands with me and lays along side me while I'm calling.

http://www.nimrodpacks.com/n215.html

WA just passed a law that makes it illegal to hunt coyotes with the aid of a dog and now I'm told that I need a ruling from the local GW before I take a dog to a coyote stand to see if he thinks it would be legal or not to have the dog at a coyote stand.

After the first shot the rest are just noise.

I used to carry my 22-250 and my 12 guage. Killed a few with each. I have actually succesfully switched guns and killed the dog while on stand.

Now, I have an AR-15 and I think that will be the only gun I carry. Will keep the shotgun with me in the truck in case I hunt some really close stuff.

My buddy carries both. I'd rather chew on a rock personally.

I've carried both at times when I knew others would be running dogs near where I was hunting, but I carry it on my ATV.

I used to but it is a hell of a nusiance so now all I pack is my rifle unless someone else is with me then the shotgun goes also. Way too much to carry if you shoot a dog and have to carry another gun. JMO. HAPPY HUNTING

What I need to do is see how my 14-in. 870 Mod. barrel patterns with HD BB and 2. It's a little handier...

Some people here dis-approve of this gun, but I have used it for three seasons now and it works great. [Linked Image]

I never carried both, but I did have two scabbards on my dirt bikes and snow machines for one of each, a .22 Mag and a 12ga with one ought. In the truck, I also carried a 250 Savage.

Around calls and such, a good fast center fire is enough, but in a coyote chase the others come in real handy.
