My first 700, so I'm trying to learn the language, figure out date etc. Is it an ADL?

U WL 84

the L could be a weak U.

My best guess was WL = August 64

It seems to fit it's other attributes, I'll let you decide.

What are the extra characters? U 84

It's a 700 in .30-06 with pressed checkering, although not as bad as I've seen. Decent mostly straight grain, probably walnut with a slightly redish stain. Apparently pretty resilient high gloss finish. Round nosed stock with pistol grip and cheek rest. Old brown white line pachmayer. No floor plate. Bolt release next to trigger. Jeweled bolt, though most of the pattern is worn off. I'd say factory swivel studs. Two position safety. Brass front sight; rear is missing but has two screws. Knurled bolt knob. Decent trigger pull.

I'd say it once had an exceptionally beautiful blue finish, though bubba done drug it through the woods. Spent time in his rear window rifle rack. Them were the days...bouncin hither and yon, threw the hollar and such with rifle near hand.

Maybe 75%, no rust but thin in places and rack wear on stock and barrel.

Thanks for your time.

Surely there is someone here who is a virtual oracle of wisdom on the peculiarities of the Remington date codes.

I looked around for for myself a while back. As I recall going by serial number you had to call Remington but there is are codes using the barrel, if original, on the net if you google.

84 is likely an inspector's stamp.
