Zedex, The fox squirrels that I chase are big; about the size of an average man's forearm. In the deep South, most folks cut them up and fry them like chicken or make squirrel and dumplings. RS

Wow!!! Those are big squirrels. What do they taste like? Sounds pretty interesting. I would like to try that sometime if they arent too gamy.

zedex, the fox squirrels are a bit on the gamey side, the greys are just plain tasty. I make a stew (Brunswick) out of them but my grandmother's fried squirrel brings back fond memories.

Sure enough. I did a search and there are lots of recipes for squirrel. Who knew. I would still like to try it.

When i was a kid we used to eat bone marrow on toast. That was delicious. Good childhood memories.

Some info for all you rabid squirrel hunters. I recently bought a Savage MK II GLV in 17 HM2 for the purpose of using the new 17 aguila round. It is a great squirrel round for late season when the shots may be 60 to 100 yds. It doesn't tear up the squirrel at all but kills soundly. the farthest shot I've got so far with it is 60-80 yds, but I will be getting several of those longer shots as the season progresses. I just acquired a couple boxes of the 17hm2 ammo, but haven't tried it yet. It is about $2.00 higher than the 17 aguila ammo. The 17 aguila is very accurate out of the 17hm2 chambering, so the the 17hm2 ammo will probably take a back seat due to the cost. You might want to check out the savage offerings in 17hm2. I got mine at wal mart for $189.00; wood stock, heavy barrel, weaver bases already installed, no open sights.

I've grown fond of downsizing in my ammo. I do like the .22 Short HP(CCI) and the Long Rifle Subsonic HP(Remington) The .410 2 1/2" #4 load (any). I've even taken squirrels with .22 Short CB under ideal conditions. A good trip to the woods this weekend might be just what the doctor ordered.AW

Thanks High Brass. How do you cook them and what do they taste like? The sqirrels here are pretty small, about the size of a hotdog. Cant be much meat on them .

Are you talking about ground squirrels?? The local grey squirrels run a pound or two. BTW, they taste exactly like squirrel! Mighty tasty.

An index on squirrel types would be great.
Google search.

paste.

Types of Tree Squirrels
Sciurus species include the Eurasian red squirrel, S. vulgaris, and the North American gray squirrels, fox squirrel, and tufted-eared squirrels. Gray squirrels have tails about as long as the combined head and body length. The eastern gray squirrel, S. carolinensis, common in the eastern half of the United States and extreme southern Canada, is up to 20 in. (51 cm) in total length, 5 in. (13 cm) high at the shoulder, and weighs 1 to 1 1/2 lb (450700 grams). It has been introduced in Europe. The western gray squirrel, S. griseus, of the U.S. West Coast, is slightly larger. The fox squirrel, S. niger, is the largest North American squirrel, reaching 29 in. (74 cm) in total length; its head is somewhat square. It displays great variation in its fur color but is commonly light brown. It is found in the eastern half of the United States, excluding the extreme northeast. Although its numbers have been greatly diminished by hunting and clearing, it is still common in some areas. It has also been introduced in city parks in western states. The tufted-eared squirrels, also called tassel-eared, or Abert, squirrels, are very distinctive, with tall plumes of hair on their ears. They inhabit yellow pine forests of the Colorado Plateau. One variety, the Kaibab squirrel, is found only on the northern rim of the Grand Canyon. North American red squirrels, also known as pine squirrels and chickarees, are species of the genus Tamiasciurus. They are small and noisy, about 12 in. (30 cm) long and 3 1/2 in. (9 cm) high, weighing 5 to 10 oz (140280 grams). They are found in the pine forests of Alaska, Canada, and the N and W United States. Other genera of arboreal squirrels are found mostly in Africa, S and SE Asia, and Central and South America

The ones we have here are tree dwellers and make a real racket when your around.(red squirrel)(pine squirrel) They can ruin a perfectly good deer stalk. I shoot them any chance i get.

PAYPAL, sucks and I will never use them again. I recommend you do the same.

Blammer, I was just up your way, Maggie Valley, and saw a bunch of red squrrils. Do y'all hunt those little guys? If so what do they taste like?

Haven't ever seen any red sqirrels where I hunt, so can't say.

If I get one I'll tell ya!

Shaman, "I like a .410 for squirrel, but .410 shells are so doggone expensive."
Holy smokes are you right. I fianally shot all my #4's up and had to buy some more. I haven't bought .410 shells in a long time, $9.38 with tax at WallyWorld. It would be cheaper to use the 30-06! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" />
