I'd love to hunt rabbits with hounds, but I haven't got the first clue on how to train a dog. Did those of you who hunt with dogs train them yourselves, or did you buy them already trained? It will be several years before I can buy a dog for rabbit hunting, as my current dog is a healthy, happy 10-year-old pup, and uncompromising on other dogs in "her" house. But I figured I'd start gathering information now for the future. DAL

why not just take your "pup" for a walk and see how she does? my lab (now gone) LOVED chasing rabbits in the off season- even bayed when he got excited or i wasn't fast enough . course he was a hunting fool! i'll probably get flamed over this one but i think ANY dog can work rabbits. AND any dog is better than no dog.

Welcome to the world of Hounds. I've been hunting rabbits with hounds for 40 plus years. Mostly Beagles and Beagle crosses. Forget about training a good hound. They'll train you ! To learn about hunting rabbits with hounds you should subscribe to a magazine called " The Rabbit Hunter ". It is for those of us who like to run and hunt over good hunds and not the AKC field trial miss-fits and show stuff. They publish once a month and have lots of good articles . You'll learn a lot. They are out of Sesser, IL. the phone number is (618) 625-2711. Good Luck and remember... a good hound is not worth waiting for !!! GET HIM NOW !!
