I'm looking at 375 H&H in either Ruger African or Remington 798, Safari Grade. Any recommendations on which is better rifle?

I, personally, would definately go with the Ruger African..You really get a lot of gun for the money..The integral quarter rib itself is a $2000 to $3000 add on with some of the better custom rifle builders these days.

+3 on the Ruger African! Imo, the Ruger is more stout, durable, along with having less of the glossy fluff.
If you have more dollars burning holes in your pockets, Ruger makes their "magnum" version with the "Circassian" (spelled right?) walnut available in the 375 H&H too. That version will be heavier, but what a beautiful piece!!!

Judging from the 798s that I have handled and shot (admittedly, none of which were "Safari Grade"), I would be inclined to select the Ruger. I have had many Rugers over the years, and I still have five of different persuasions, and have never had a bad one.

I think the Remington 798 Africans are history. 798s are not on the Remington web site and the only two 798 Africans I've seen were in 458 WM at Cabelas in Reno about a year ago. The 798s were advertised by Remington as being 458 WM or 375 H&H. Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong about this.
Ruger has the 375 H&H bolt gun as the 77 RSM model. The Ruger African isn't available with the H&H cartridge. The weight difference between the two Rugers feels like two plus pounds to me. The Ruger African is svelte and the RSM is sized more for the 416 Rigby and 458 Lott.

mdjamesh,
You could look for a 798 African on Gunsamerica.com of Gunbroker.com. There are penty of other 375 H&H Mauser actioned sporters for sale at any given time.
I do agree that the Ruger African for the features and the price is a very good deal.

You'll have to excuse me on this but...I'd go for neither and would do a Ruger Hawkeye in 375 Ruger.

Dober .......................I would have mentioned the same thing too, as I prefer the 375 Ruger over the H&H. But I stayed with his choice of the 375 H&H.

Depends on what you want it for. If you're going to hunt stateside and AK, then the 375 Ruger is fine. I was just at a camp in northern Tanzania in August and September. The only ammo available was .375 H&H and .458 Win. There wasn't a round of .375 Ruger to be had. We showed up with two hunters and two .375 H&H's and a .458 Win. I took the guns over for us, so I was limited to five kilos of ammo for all three rifles. We squeaked by with what I brought, but only because there were two animals on my license that were not available due to the severe drought. I would have had plenty of spare H&H to choose from.
I could care less about getting into a discussion about the superiority of either cartridge, the Ruger or the H&H. But if you intend to hunt Africa, leave the Ruger at home, unless you are absolutely positively certain that the airline won't lose your luggage and your ammo supply along with it. Those are the facts in one area of Africa I've spent two safaris hunting.
The .375H&H, the .458 Win Mag and , possibly, the 9.3x62 are the most common cartridges in Africa. They are among the best available and will do it all. So make your choice based on the projected utilization of the rifle. Just my 2 cents.
