I have a Savage 99 that has copper fouling in the bore. I tried 2 applications of Hoppes Copper Eliminator to no avail
Bought the gun last year and it was fouled then so it's been in there a while
On the other hand the gun shoots great (1.5" or less at 100 yds) and the bore is pristine and shiny other than the copper fouling I can see at the muzzle, so maybe I should leave it alone?
I definetly DON'T want to use anything that would harm the bore or bluing if I accidentally get some on my fingers or outside of the gun
Thanks in advance,
Steve

I like Sweet's 7.62 a lot for the tough stuff.
Or if it's bad enough, give it a little scrubbing with JB Paste.
Other guys seem to have good success with the various foaming treatments.
Lots of options out there.

A Doe walks out of the woods today and says, that is the last time I'm going to do that for Two Bucks.

The best stuff out there today is Wipe Out. It is extremely effective, Use as directed, it won't harm anything...
If you want some really strong stuff then mix a quart of 25% commercial Amonia (not the household stuff) with a cup of Hydrogen Peroxide and toss in a copper bullet to turn it blue. This stuff is called "Blue Goop" by the old time benchresters and it works, but you must not leave it in your bore more than 20 minutes then dry patch it clean with about 3 or 4 patches then oil the bore profusely or you wil ruin the bore but used correctly it is very good stuff..I keep some of it around at all times for those really bad bores.....but with the advent of Wipe Out I seldom if ever use the Blue Goop anymore...

Emphasize: you must not leave it in your bore more than 20 minutes - anything made up with ammonia.
Similar to the ancient Ordinance Department Metal Fouling Solution which was problematic. I'd stick to commercial products and follow the directions. Sweet's and Barnes have worked well for me. Haven't tried Wipe Out yet, too much of the other stuff left, but sounds like good stuff.

I've been using barnes cr-10 but I'm going to try wipe-out soon.

I use Montana Extreme Copper Solvent and, as recommeded by ColdBore, JB Paste. Montana Extreme has a potent ammonia odor, so use it outdoors if possible.

if you have a serious layer of copper fouling then try the Montana X-treme's 50 BMG it's more aggressive than their normal cleaner which is very good in normal circumstances. http://www.montanaxtreme.com/products/50_bmg_solvent.php

I ordered Wipeout foam and JB borepaste today. Let you guys know how it works out Didn't want to try something as aggressive as Montana with the ammonia just yet and risk the bore as there would be no going back with it and not ruin the value of the gun. If the Wipeout and JB don't work, I'll go to the Montana stuff (what the devil--only money,no? )
Thanks for the tips--keep you posted.

The Wipe Out will work, no question about that..You may have to use it a couple of times with 20 minute waits...Jim Brockman tells me he leaves it in overnight..I have not tried that, scared to and a couple of 20 min. waits has worked on some of the most ugly of bores...
As to the use of Amonia, its not a problem, all you have to do is not leave it in the bore more than 20 minutes or even 30 minutes..I would think anybody could do that, but you would be surprised that some cannot apparantly..Amonia is the only thing that really works btw..Wipe Out is amonia based like any good copper remover..
JB and Kroil works but it takes forever to polish out copper fouling.
Wipe Out and bore snakes are the best thing since sliced white bread..

I like "TM Solution" available at Cabela's. Two soaked patches through the bore, dwell about 5 min. then dry patch. I repeat until no blue shows on the dry patch. Usually 2 passes are enough. Sometimes I use a nylon brush soaked with TM.

..Wipe Out is amonia based like any good copper remover.... I've heard and read that Wipe Out has no ammonia, but if you run a patch through the barrel after the foam has worked for a few minutes it stinks like ammonia. Good stuff, but I'm leery of leaving it in the barrel overnight. Like you said, letting it work for 20 minutes sounds about right.

Wipe Out. I have used it overnight several times and it works great. Won't harm a thing.
