I was out and about today and saw a decent Savage/Valmet 330 in 20 gauge today, IC/Mod. They wanted $575 for it. If you are interested I'd be happy to give you the name and phone number of the shop. It was in 95% +/- condition.

Probably worth it, but 'way higher than I can go right now. Putting most of my (few) gun $ into T-C Encore barrels.....
If anybody takes ROMAC up on his kind offer, I'd: 1) ask about the condition/color/figure of the wood (many of these had very bland blondy stocks; the good news is that they are light weight) and 2) offer them a max of $500 cash to start with. Unfortunately hunting season, meaning shotgun buying season, is upon us, and they may hang tough on the price.
One of the few negatives I can find on Savage/Valmets is that they aren't readily convertible to shooting steel shot. So that 20 should probably be confined to lead and the more expensive non-toxics.
The tighter choked ones (M/F or F/F) can be converted with Briley "thinwall" choke tubes, but you need to choose your gunsmith well. (I had Briley do it to my 330 Magnum before I found out it may be one of a kind; I also had choke tubes fitted to the shotgun barrel of my 2400--it was Xtra-full originally). The barrels of these guns are relatively thin; not like a Ruger Gold Label, but pretty thin. Not too much meat there for choke tube threads.
And if you have a gunsmith do barrel work on these, you should tell him in advance what my gunsmith (White Dog in Utica, NY) told me when he opened the chokes on my 333--"Man, those Finn barrels are harder than woodpecker lips! Ate my first reamer right up!"

The 412/512 barrels won't fit any but those models. I had a Lion 12ga and several 2400s in 12/308. I loved the 2400 guns, as they were much lighter than my later 412's and Tikka 512 in 12/9,3X74R. All are functional and dependable guns. All I have in the safe now is a 412S 12ga. I do need a set of 12/9,3X74R barrels.

What a riot i saw a german made (old )combo at a gun show a while back and it was chambered in a 9mm+ caliber.the seller had some ammo ----they looked like bananas!!they have buffalo down here in fl but they're on ranches.some times they get loose and we see them wandering across the woods at our hunting camp.we generally won't shoot them but the axis deer that get loose are another matter

luv2safaari, sorry to hear the 412/512 barrrels won't interchange with my older guns, but many thanks for the info--saves me a fruitless search! Guess I'll have to stick with my .308. On the other hand, there's nothing in CA or WA where I hunt that the .308 won't do (I'll keep the 12 ga barrel loaded with a slug in case a piggy runs the wrong way....).
