I would like to request information on original smokeless loads for the 50-110 Winchester - the only information that I have been able to find on the net is on the Wikipedia website which I don't trust though it talks about a 300 gr bullet at 2225 fps. I am an Ammo uide subscriber but no one has posted any information there as yet.
Would 50 Alaskan data work? I understand that it is a shortened 50-110. I am new to reloading and would appreciate any additional hints that anyone may have for me. This information is for a new custom SS rifle that I am planning - I am just trying to learn as much as possible before making my decision.
Thanks and good hunting!

I have no idea whether the .50-110 was ever factory loaded with smokeless powder or not. If you can find out how much black powder was loaded you could use the old 40% formula in substituting IMR 4198. I would think that AA 5744 would work well also! I suggest you contact the ballistician at Accurate Arms powder co. He helped me recently with a reduced loading for my .458. Very helpful guy! Sorry, but I have lost the link address. Google the powder company, and you will find a "contact us" section. Best of luck! George

There were no "original" smokeless loads for the .50-110 that I can recall reading about. The case is so voluminous and a 300 grain bullet so short, that you'd have too much space to fill. If you have a modern style firearm, like the Ruger #1 chambered for a .50-110, you could probably work up some safe loads for it.
I don't think there's a non-custom gun chambered for it, that was meant to handle smokeless ammo.

George, Thanks, I shall contact Accurate Arms. Dan, I had the same concerns that you list but I have seen some references including here: http://www.winchestercollector.org/guns/w-collectables.shtmlWinchester Ammunition Test Fire Block used to test Winchester High Velocity 50-110 caliber smokeless powder load. That is why I was wondering. Thank you very much, gentlemen, and I shall do as you suggest. Good hunting!
