I hunted a couple 7mm Remington Magnums for a few of years and hunted a 7X57 for almost 30 yrs. But the one I've come back to is the .280. I'm on my second, a full custom that I had reworked, lightened to just the right weight. It as good as anything every gets as far as my experience with it can tell for what I hunt.
Is it "the best 7mm rifle ?" That's up to the guy using it. Some would prefer a 7mm Mag of some sort. I've toyed with the idea of having it rechambered, but not seriously.
It will reach as far as I can hit anything and it kills well out there. It is light enough to carry all day and it settles right down when I'm out of breath and need to shoot quickly.
One disadvantage of the .280 vs. say the 7mm RM is that there are few factory loads which are loaded up to the .280 full potential. I can say the same thing about the 7X57, BTW.
I don't know about "best" in a general sense, but, to me, this is where I am and I have no real plans to change it. E

For sheer business the 7 Remington Mag is hard to beat. Very reasonable recoil and devastating on animals. That said there is a soft spot for a Number 1 in 7x57.

.284x51mm is my personal favorite.

Aside from that, I'd go with a 7mm WSM. Have never owned one, though it's hard to not like the concept of a 280AI +P in a short action. If I had a long action to build on, I'd go with 280AI.

I have to go with the 7/08 for most of my hunting. I also like the 280 Rem. I have not been too impressed with the Improved version of the 280 though.
