Now with the powder getting really(!) hard to find, I need to reload my GG, but out of 4198. Does anyone have a load using IMR 4350, with 350 FP?

too slow a powder for that casing. Try IMR3031, Benchmark, RL7.

got to go with the shootist, find another powder. If you don't have it, get a copy of loadbooks for the 45-70. Lots of good info, just about the 45-70.

3031 works for me too.

You can't do better than AA2015; H322; H335 or N133. Any of those will get you more than H4198 or IMR4198. And the OLD IMR 3031, is just that OUTDATED compared to those listed above. Check out any recent handloading manual. RL7 is still very good, but not temperature stable. 3031 was good in its day, but others have come along which are much better.

Tell me more about that N133. I have some I bought to duplicate the AMU 80gr .223 High Power competition loads, but lost my nerve after seeing the Army Marksman Unit LC brass with the missing primers.

PS -I'm using the Re-7 with great results, but haven't shot it extremely hot or extremely cold. Also I'm 4 grs below max Marlin loads. Stopped there after watching a 405 RCBS GC go through a section of telephone pole and disappear deeper into the backstop than I could dig. Dead is dead, right?

I've found Re 17 to be very stable, at least in temps below about 75 or so. I have found little velocity difference between that and 20 F.

20 F ought to cover things here in GA. If you add that temp to a healthy dose of our humidity, it is COLD.

Are you saying you can get IMR 4350? I've seen a grand total of two 1 lb bottles in the last two years here in Northern California. I wouldn't use any 4350 in 45-70s as my first choice-- it needs a faster (and more readily available) powder.
