I'm looking to put together a rifle in a 7mm caliber. I am no expert at all but I have been leaning towards the .284 win over the 7mm rem mag or the short mags bc I am thinking I will get a more efficient chambering, better barrel live, may give up a little velocity but not much, and would not be as finicky loading for. The article I read on the .284 in 6mmbr was interesting. I was going to build it on a long action so that is why I am also thinking of the possibility of the .280 AI as well. I don't know much about these chamberings so I'm looking for some input thanks.

I favor the 284 but see where it seems to be limited to one powder that will give it the steam it needs. RL17.

If RL17 does not work you can always finish up the chamber to the 280 AI.

Just an idea.

Make sure you have a long enough barrel shank.

I had a 25" fluted, number 5, Lilja on a 700 s/a in 284 Win.

My two go to loads were H-4350 with 140 Partitions, or H-414 with Sierra 140 SBT's. Either load ran 3075 fps at 2.800".

Can't compare to a 280 or the AI version, never had the need.....

This article in 6mmbr.com will have all you need to know about a 284 as a long rang rifle. Jerry Tierney won the NBRSA 1000yd light class with a plain 284.

My one and only beanfield rifle is a 284 Win. Best accuracy is with RL-15 and light weight bullets.
The standard 280 and the 284 are very close w/r to ballistics.
The 280AI ought to be mo better.

I would choose between the 284, 280AI, or 7 Rem Mag depending solely on the action I had to build on. Either of the three will do what you want to do with a .284 bullet.

7 Rem mag for long range shooting has some issues, for some reason when you step up to that level they throw fliers every now and then. David tried them, including the 7 stw and it just wasn't worth it. But go backwards for some reason to the 280, even the AI, or the 284 and life is fine.

I am talking about results at 1000 yards.

If you are building on a short action, 284 is the way to go. If a medium i.e. 30/06 length action, there is no reason not to go with a 7mm RemMag or similar. They are NOT bad barrel burners and you can get the speeds you want without having to push the pressure envelope hard with your handloads like the 280AI guys do to try to prove thier 280's are just small, efficient 7Mags. Bovine doo doo. The laws of physics are what they are and a small case cannot, with the same pressures and barrel length etc do what a larger case can do. Even if one did burn out his barrel in 1500-2000 rounds, that would be about the time most of use would want to play with some other cartridge anyway. New Barrels are not that expensive and it is fun to do something new every so often. Could go 7 Mag again, you will have gotten your moneys worth by the time you wear it out.

What action are you starting out with?

Long action with 06 bolt face. 280AI. Got one love mine, have no desire to every be with out one.

I load to max safe level, Published Data from Nolser #5. I got 4 loads out of my brass so far no issues. A guy that pushes a case for speed is going to do it with any case not just ones with a 40deg shoulder. I could have built a 7mag just as easy. Ran a 280 for years, liked it alot. Went Ai becuase when I over hauled mine, I wanted something a little different with out changing much. BTW Deer drop dead when I use F/F loads on them also.

I would personaly and have gone 280AI a few times. Thinking of building another. 160's at 3000FPS is never a bad thing in my opinion.

Last week I was face with the same problem 284,280AI or 7mag. I made up dummy rd for the 284 on long action took that up to the gunsmith along with 280AI case.

I decided on the 280AI using a Bartlein 5r 24.5" long be a nice deer/elk rifle. I may still do a 284 later on use a SA Wyatt magazine. If I was going to do a short mag then I'd find a win short mag action already set up.

Hard to say what the best choice and I figure when I start pull the trigger then I'll find out. Well good luck

Sorry for te late reply. I'm going to build it on a savage long action. I think any of the cartriges will have enough velocity potential. What I am looking for the most is ease of reloading for and accuracy probably.
