My Green Mountain barrel is holding onto the nipple like crazy after 10 or so rounds go through it. What are you guys using to prevent these things from getting so tight you can barely remove them? Screw in choke tube lube or something like that work?

One wrap of teflon plumbers tape works like a champ. Less mess as well.

Do you put tape on the nipple threads? Heard of putting it on the breech, and I don't see why it wouldn't work on the nipple, but would have to thin it down somewhat.

I think, as an amatuer plumber, I have the thicker teflon. Heading to the depot to see what they have in various thicknesses. Is there any kind of grease out there that might work?

Haven't experienced that particular problem so maybe this won't help. I've always used a little anti-seize grease on nipple threads - the silvery (contains aluminum powder) stuff Permatex sells in auto parts stores. Works on choke tubes too.

I use the white teflon tape. Just buy it at the local hardware store. I use it on all my breech plugs and nipples as well. They always break loose easily and never leave the nasty mess of antiseize. AS works fine, I just prefer the tape.
Wrap one wrap from the bottom of the nipple up, so you don't get any on the flash hole. You can tighten it and remove the excess or trim it with a razor.
good luck

I have a tub of lithium grease that I use on my breechplug. I have used it on nipples before and without any ill effects.

Having had cap and ball units as well as flintlocks in various calibers I have found that just coating the treads with wonderlube or bore butter works well. I have had no problem with threads seizing with either of these and thay are a preservative as well so you do not end up with rusting either.

We always have used just white lithium grease and have never had one stick. I use the Knight grease as well and no problems there either.

I use Crisco either white or yellow, the wonder shortening. Been using it for years, use it on breechplugs too.

I have used bore butter on the nipple of my Bobcat and anti-seize on the breech plug of my Optima, never a problem.
