Interesting read.

I would respectfully disagree on 2 points:

1. I believe that the 8mm Lebel was the first cartridge designed for smokeless powder, not the 30-30.

2. The 32 WS was chambered for many years in the Marlin 93/36/336 and I would not consider that family of rifles to be any "lesser" than the Winchester 1894/94 family.

Cwereley...

Thank you for your kindness and your consideration of us all in posting the article for the benefit of those of us who frequent this form... I found it very interesting and informative.

From my knowledge and experience in reloading for over 40 years, I found that the .303 Savage cartridge is slightly superior (ballistically-speaking) to the .30/30 Winchester cartridge... it is surprising that the .303 Savage didn't become the more popular cartridge. Butttttttt... that's yet another "discussion", eh? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Again... thanx for posting the article...

Apparently the extra 20 grains of bullet weight made a difference, back before WWI the .303 was considered a pretty good moose cartridge in Maine.
