I found a great deal on Barrel Blanks. I was looking at the Montana Riflemans Website www.montanarifleman.com and under their specials area they have a bunch of excess stocked barrel blanks for $50.00 a piece and $20.00 for contouring. I am ordering several myself, but thought you all might like to know as well.

They had quite a few 1 in 8" ROT SS .224" blanks when I called and spoke to Shane. I'm thinking that for $70 turned to their #4 contour, I could go for a 1-8" ROT SS .224" bore barrel for that lonely Remington 7 SS action that is gathering dust on the edge of the book case in the gun room. Maybe bed it into the H-S Precision stock that I bought last year.

I got the last 1-9, and Shane said tha they were getting out of the custom rifle bid-niss to concentrate on manufacturers, and as such, they had sold half of the remaining barrels

Dang it, MTmuzzleloader. You just cost me some $. Just picked up a stainless .323 for an 8mm Rem Mag build. Went with a #4 contour 26" finished. Ought to fit my HS Precision stock barrel channel nicely.

You guys are a bad influence, I just ordered 2 of the 7mm 1-10 twist cm tubes, and am having them contoured #2.
They said their stock is quickly dwindling, and they are running 4-6 wks on countouring, due to the number of folks asking to contour barrels.
Looks like I'll be putting a 7tcu together sooner than later.

Just ordered 224 CM for a 22-250 24" #3 contour. Sure sounded like a great deal. There web site states that they lap their barrels. Does anyone know whether they have lapped these barrels? I forgot to ask when I ordered mine.

dumb newbie question... so if i bought one of these blanks and had them contour it, what else is left to do before install? 1. chamber it? 2. thread it? 3. extractor cut? 4. cut to length and crown?
what else? how much does this typically cost from a reputable gunsmith? i called one that i think is reputable and they said $400-$800, which i thought was high. is this about right? thanks, kstockfo

from 150 to 250 dollars would be fairly typical depending upon the finish desired, action make and model, and any unspecified work desired. GD

Don't forget bluing or some form of coating if it's a c/m barrel.
Shop rates are running $50-100. There are some excellent smiths that work part time from home, so have low overhead and hence lower costs. There are also many bubba smiths that should not be allowed to touch a gun, let alone work on one.
To thread and chamber the barrel you are looking at $150-200 Extractor cut will add $50-75 Cut and crown is ~$50
Finishing will depend on what type of finish you want, and what work needs to be done to the action and barrel blank.
I can't see going to the trouble to put a custom barrel on a rifle unless the result is better than a factory gun. Hence put the time in to a find a good smith, and be willing to pay for what it cost. I've had low dollar bubba work done, and the rifle shot worse than a factory rifle, and still cost more than a factory rifle.

I have already ordered two SS Blanks in # 3 contour , 243 cal and 20 cal. Already have the 224 # 3
A Doe walks out of the woods today and says, that is the last time I'm going to do that for Two Bucks.

anybody have any recommendations for a high-quality, work at home kind of gunsmith in southeastern michigan? i'd love to rebarrel a rimfire .22 to a .17m2, but don't want to spend too much on it.
thanks, kstockfo
