Hi Guys, I am new to the Forums here, and notice a lot of less-than-flattering comments about the EG Savages. Is this due to there being something wrong with the EG's, or just more elite collectors liking something less common? It appears that .300 EG's are the most common 99 out there, but if they were dogs, would they have sold so well? I am just trying to sift through the comments and understand. I have been looking for a really nice .250 EG here in NC for 20 years at shows....I've never seen a clean one. Very few nice 99's at all....most are drilled & tapped and have sling swivels. God Bless, Marc

Pre-Mil F's and EG's are my favorites. Lot of bantering back and forth in the forum. Got to be tuned in to the sarcasm. I'm always picking on the R's (boat anchors), but honestly nothing wrong with a nice clean R...As long as somebody else is carrying it for you. Ha. (See what I mean.) Randy

They get abused by the serious collectors due to how common they are, and by the hunters because most of them weren't factory d&t. Seems the two groups seem to converge on the 1950's F as the "supreme" rifle. Hooey. Most of the folks own one or more, and they're a great hunting rifle with classic lines. Works for me, at least.

Loggah's right on the money--course if some of Canadian guys (I won't say who!) knew how much pristine EG's were going for in our area (NH) they'd freak. D&T, swivels, huge scratches in wood or initials carved in the stock or names engraved in the receiver, Remington butt plates on them (I kid you not) and an EG like mine from the 40's or 50's will still start at $450 up here in a gun shop or a gun show, and good luck finding one as a private sale. Anything you'd really want to own is $650+ and that gun wouldn't be perfect.

When I was growing up in NH, 99EGs in 300 Savage were as common as Winchester 12s in 12 gauge are here in NE. 25 years ago, you could buy really nice 99EGs in 300 Savage almost anywhere in New England for under $300. Heck, I remember buying a pristine 1899CD in 32-40 for $425 at Alstead Gun in Alstead, NH, and a pretty darned good 99T in 250-3000 for $350 at Big Al's in Seabrook, NH. I am getting too old for this stuff!

EGs get picked on a lot because they are so "common" , but in truth a good clean not DT example is not so "common".

That is a great deer and a great gun. But I think if I have to see a picture of that deer and that gun one more time I am going to puke. Randy

I like them even if D&Td. Especially in 250-3thousand.Makes it easier to mount a scope so you can use it!

Last year, my son-in-law used my R to shoot his first deer. He thought it to be a great gun and started making comments about wanting to buy it. This year I let him use my EG 300 Savage scoped with a 2X7 Leupold. He shot a deer at about 175 yards, one shot kill. Two days later, I shot a deer at a measured 231 yards - again a one shot kill. The R has been forgotten about and thats good because I sold it!
I would not mind a nice F, but I love the EG's. I think they look like a Savage should. And, I like the way a .300 kills with out much damage to the meat. So, if I could find another .300 EG, drilled and tapped in nice condition I would take it and live happily ever after. Gary

EG's are fine hunting rifles. They don't get much respect around here because most of them aren't collectable. Most of them have been modified to some extent and they are about the most available in any shape or form. An EG in .300 Savage is arguably the most common M99 there is. That doesn't mean that they aren't good shooters. It just means that they are the most common and for the most part they are also the most likely to have been modified and have therefore lost their collector value. On the other hand, try to find a clean one in .243 or .308.
