All forms of martial arts, no matter what reagon the came from started with a club or staff, then evolved to spear and sword. many of the Asian/Japanese forms, carry it futher and bacame part of a religion or a way of life.Many of the Japanese styles are more effective because they were acctually used in war or for self defense longer and to more recent times than others. For instance in western cultures the art of the sword went out of style in the 1500s with the general use of gunpowder, swoed were used on the battle fields and dueleing but not as a defensive tool so much, so now 500 yaers later fencing and the use of saber or broadsword is prety much unkown, except to hobbyist. I am thinking an old time samuri would dismember your friend before he even got his stance right. Great video though
