I may have an opportunity to purchase a near new Tikka for about 500 bucks in .300 Win Mag. My buddy has a .308 and it's a great rifle in my opinion. This is the synthetic stock with stainless. Opinions please. My normal deer rifle is a Ruger.270 Stainless Syn. but I am looking for an elk rifle for next year. Thanks and great site you have here. Beee

.300 Win doesn't have the panache of the Weatherby or all that "newness" of the shortfats but, honestly, for hunting NA a good, light, accurate rifle (like, I don't know, a Tikka T3 Lite in stainless) in .300 Win would just about handle whatever you wnated to point it at from any sane range. Anything much bigger in a rifle that light could get...troubling for many.
BTW I have the twin of your buddies rifle and yeah, I like it alot.
If there's one thing I've become certain of it's that there's too much certainty in the world.

Assuming it`s a T3, you will have more recoil with a 300 Win. If you can handle that, then ok.
But on the flip side, your 270 is very capable of downing any bull elk in existence and then some!!!
You may want to save your money and buy a caliber that won`t overlap duties or capabilities with your 270.
Don`t be influenced or get caught up in that "I gots to have a magnumitus" disease in order to successfully kill big bull elk.
If you already didn`t have a 270, the 300 Win is an excellent choice.
Btw, I had a 300 Winny for 30+ years.

Thanks for the advice. Many of my buddies are hunting elk with a .270 and I did this year as well. I didn't have any opportunities to shoot one however. The Magnumitis may just be what I have developed.....Perhaps my existing rifle is the one I need???? Good stuff and keep it coming. I like to think things over a bit before a decision. Beee

I have fired hundreds of rounds through tikka t3 300 win mags,my take is yeh the recoil is a little more than say a rem 700 because it is lighter. The triggers are oustanding and every tikka I have owned has been accurate. If you don't want a little bit more recoil than a rem 700 in 300 win mag then you probably won't like it. If you don't care you will love it!

I had a T3 Hunter in 300 WinMag and the recoil was terrible...and I'm 6' 2" and 200 lbs. I sold it because I had no pleasure shooting it and also because of the plastic pieces that turned me really off.

At 5'7" and 155lbs perhaps recoil could be an issue....

I'm gonna try out your definition of terrible very soon. Picking up a XCR 700 in 375 Ultra this wkend. My thoughts is that a man should have one gun in his arsenal that can kill any beast on this planet handily

Now I've heard it isn't that bad Maybe this guy should shoot a 375 Ultra then the Tikka t3 in 300 will be his pussy cat. I'll try not to lie when I comment on shooting it later. If its that bad I'll probably say so. Funny thing is that I've talked to a couple guys who have em and they don't think its all that bad. Another thing, in choosing the Ultra version I will be able to load to H&H levels but if I had an H&H I sure wouldn't be able to load to Ultra levels.
