I have taken on a chore to sell some Savage guns for a relative. I understand there is a Model 20 .300 Savage, a Model 24 Camper Special .22 LR/20 ga and a single shot rifle and shotgtun set (.30-30 and 12 ga).

Where is a good place to sell these guns?

thanks...jim

The classifieds at the bottom of the main page is a good place to start.

To bad they're in the U.S. or I'd be all over the model 219. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

Bluetick & Contender,

I will examine these guns this weekend and write up a description to post here.

Thanks for the interest. I hope you Savage collectors can help me price these things. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Savage Model 20 Serial number 10XXX. 24" barrel (nominal), .300 Savage cal. Equipped with tricky little bolt peep (it has a little insert that pops in and out for game or target use), and what appears to be an original leather sling. The stock shows use and handling. The steel butt plate has a savage crest stamp and a ding at the heel. The screw slots look good. The rifle is "old looking" to me. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> It had some surface rust on the barrel that cleaned up.

Savage Model 24C (Series P) serial number B498XXX .22 LR?20 ga (2.75"). 20" barrels. Cartridge butt plate and Williams hammer extension. Minor nicks in stock finish. My wife likes this one.

The two-barrel set is either Model 219 or 220 depending where you look. The receiver has "-219-" on the right side, but no serial number. The box end and the hang tag are also model numbered (not 219). The .30-30 barrel is 26" with buckhorn rear sight and bead front. The 12 ga/ 2.75" shotgun barrel is 30". Wood shows handling marks and the butt plate has a chip at the heel. There is also a vinyl soft case that holds the butt and one barrel.

If you wanted to hunt white tail up close this would be a cool rifle to do it with.

Here us what I forgot to add on the 219/220/221.

The box end label and hanging tag say Savage Model 221 Utility Gun and Rifle. The shotgun barrel says model 220 and the rifle barrel says Model 219.

The box has a lot of rips along the foldings of the cardboard, but it is mostly there.

If the m20 is unmolested without any extra holes drilled in it I will give you $300 sight unseen.

hunterjim,

What is your definition of "good place"? At one extreme, internet auctions will generate the most money, risk, and time cost. On the other extreme, a local gun shop will give you the least return for the most security and speed of sale. Classified ads and gunshows fall in between.

What are you looking for in a "place"?

Bluetick,

I am going to get a digital photo done of the M20. I will post when I have them.

Randy,

I was thinking the Savage Collectors would be a good place to start in selling these guns; I read this forum frequently, but I have not posted anything before. My grandfather used a M99, and so did one uncle. My Dad hunted with a Model 20 (he still has it).

I was thinking I could find a good home for these guns since they are not run of the mill as you find in local gun shops, around here anyway.

I have bought and sold with the internet auctions before, and also used local gun shops (buying and selling). I used to live in Washington and frequented the Washington Arms Collectors shows in those days. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Hunterjim,

I was trying to get a feel for whether you wanted to turn them over 'fast', get most money, or have the most fun. I like to help someone selling for family or friends get the most money. Of course, if you are looking for fast, I've never seen an M20 that I did not like.

Post some pictures. If you don't find a buyer here, we'll provide some legitimate embelishments for your advertising efforts. For example, you have a M20 in the 10000 serial number range. The rifle model went through a transition at about serial 10400. After 10400, it is a Model 20/1926, and at most 2,600 rifles were made in that style. If less than 10400, it is an early model, likely with a 'Model U' barrel, and only 1,400 of those were made. Very 'RARE' beasts they are! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

If the last 3 digits are from 400 to 500, it could be one of the rifles marked as 'Improved' on the receiver ring, and only 50 of those were made. One of the rarest of all. And on and on...

Those M24s seem to be popular now, too. Post away.

I'd like to get a description of your rifle and your father's just for my own reference.

HunterJim,

Any luck on those pictures? If you are waiting to get access to your Dad's rifle so you can include a good description of it too, don't let me rush you... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Randy,

I am just making haste slowly, and the chores and some volunteer work for the NH&F Day got in the way. Perhaps tomorrow afternoon I will get some photos, Lord Harry willing and the creek don't rise.

My Dad's rifle is the Model 20 with the skinny fore end. I don't know the serial number, as it is under the scope mount that the rifle came with. The scope is a fixed 2.5X with a post and fine crosswire reticle, and I do not remember the make. I will take a peek the next time I visit the folks.

My Model 20 has a serial number in the 107XX range, and is not marked with Improved.
