Mike...
All said, the Savage 99 is a genius of a rifle. Although no longer produced, it remains highly revered, as it was the foundation from which Arthur Savage built one of America's great gun companies. >> (Jon Y. Wolfe) <<

Real nice find - a M1907-19. Carr's book indicates only 800 made with the larger slide serrations, spur hammer and matte black finish. Savage restarted production in October 1919 when materials were hard to come after WWI. The finish appears to be factory based on the photos. A great addition to a collection.

Pure dumb luck Rory , even a blind squirrel finds an acorn now & again. Now thanks to savage pistols I know why this pistol didn't exactly match any of the pictures or descriptions in my library. Price was what I would call very reasonable also Mike

Jim, I notice that in Browers book on this same model that the gun shown in the book has a barrel cut for a cartridge indicator yet was not provided with one. Does this mean any type 2 380 can use any 380 barrel thrown in the gun, cut for indicator or not?

From what info I can find so far Savage pistols came in 3 different finishes , high polish , "Parkerized" and something in between. I don't know if the finish on this one is original or not , savage pistols seems to think it is. If savage pistols name is any indication then he probably knows more about these than I do. The grip is not like the 1917 because it is a 1907. There is a 1917 , 1915 and 1907 in my avatar , all in 32ACP.

I really would like to get a close look at a 1915 I think the hammer less design would fit me just fine. But probably should leave them for the collectors still think one would be fun though.

The 1915 had a grip safety and a slide stop after the last shot. The slide release is on the frame just over the foreward part of the triggerguard. Why would you "leave them for collectors" ? get one , shoot it and have fun with it. Savage pistols are not expensive. Mike

Sounds like you guys in N.Y. actually have it worse than Canada! All I need is to call my gun in and have it registered in my name and wait for an ATT. I've got two 1915's in 380 now, the one on top is in mint condition, it's the one I had to have a new barrel made for ($200) but the gun only cost me $50 so I couldn't complain, it's fun to shoot. The one on the bottom has some pitting to the end of the slide and it's kind of a mystery to me. The serial number on it is MD85X (pretty sure it don't stand for Mad Dog). Doesn't make sense to get it lettered as I doubt JC has anything in his records that will bring up a serial number like that. I don't think it was worked over and then reserialed because the small circle "R" is still right behind the serial number. Anyone with Browers book knows that this was a known inspector mark from the factory so it wasn't filed down and a new serial number put on it. Just can't figure out why it was serialed so differently than the others. It's the one that opened my hand up for me last year.
