Just got back from Montana pheasant hunt. Great time, good birds, etc....

I hunt with a few different shotguns but lately I've carried my Superposed more and more. I've always felt deadly with it but this time I'm just not satisfied with my shooting. I limited out everyday don't get me wrong, but with the rooster jumping as wild as they were, I just wasn't killing em. Thank goodness the dogs were there to pick em up. I feel good about my choice of shells. No. 6's and 4's. 1 1/4 oz. etc..

I think I've screwed up because all these years I thought both barrels were modified choke. After a closer look I'm not sure. I might have two skeets!

So here is the marking: (**s) on both barrels. What do I have?

Not sure exactly what you meant to type in the parentheses, but if it was an "S" after the two dots it looks like Skeet choke.

Your gun is bored skeet and skeet. What I shoot on pheasants over pointing dogs with that boring is 1 1/4 ounces of 7 1/2 shot. You will have difficulty bettering that because 6 shot needs a whopping big load to get enough pellets into the pattern to kill roosters cleanly any further than 30-35 yards. 7 1/2 shot has enough pellets that it still tends to break wings and legs even if it doesn't get the head or neck. Anything larger than 6s will be so sparse in the pattern out of a skeet choke that it's worthless. 1 1/2 ounces of sixes might be OK, but any less is a waste of time.

Just shoot premium ammo with nickel plated shot, 5's or 6's and you will have no problem killing roosters at 40 yards. It's a lot more about the ammo than it is the choke anymore.

Thanks for the info guys. Two skeet barrels it is.

orion03, will you explain in more detail what you mean by it being more about ammo than choke. I'm well versed in rifle reloading but certainly not shotshell.
