Lets hear from those that use a bubba chopped or 1960s import house cut or whatever else milsurp rifle. Is it a Carcano, a Jap, or maybe a mauser "army" rifle that an uncle brought home.
Everybody has their say about the custom gunsmith built rifles but how many still do it the old fashioned way with whatever works?

only one man i know uses an old military firearm. he is at least 78 years old, hunts while sitting on a plastic 5 gal bucket that he carries into the woods, and uses a 1903-a3 springfield, exactly as issued many years ago. no scope. he kills a couple deer every year too.

Carcano! What can you do with an old Carcano?

ive got a cut down SMLE....has yet to draw blood on anything other than ground squirrels and rabbits.....have a fully sporterized M1917 in 338-06 and a sporterized 1895 Chilean Mauser in 7x57....neither have drawn blood....my Kimber 84M weights under 7 pounds ready to hunt....hard not to grab it on the way out the door instead of the milsurps.....

A guy came strolling by my seat last weekend carrying an old Springfield '03 over his shoulder, hand-held by the front of the barrel, with the bolt all the way open. I took one look at it and said, what are U shooting? His eyes lit up and he handed me the rifle. It was NEAT, to say the least. He was shooting store bought '06 ammo with 165 grain bullets. Does my heart good to see those fine old rifles being used...

My first rifle was a sporterized 1917 Enfield. Still hunt with it, and it still puts them down.

I asked this because I helped a guy load an elk into his truck last weekend. He shot a chopped 98 in 8x57. His knife was a 10" plastic handle kitchen knife.
It all worked.

I use a M94 swede mauser carbine as my truck/quad rifle, my granddaughter hunts with a 1895 Chilean Loewe mauser. They are still accurate and put meat on the table despite being over 100 years old, and with a little TLC should last another century! My primary hunting rifle is a FN built, 24/30 Venezuelan contract '98 mauser with a Brno 270 win barrel sitting in a Husqvarna stock, strange combo, but very effective.

Used a slightly modified '98 in 8X57 to take hogs some years back. Did a fine job of that.

K98 WWII bring-back. Still in 8x57, original barrel cut to 20" and recrowned; bolt bent; D/T'd; Timney Sportsman; Beuhler safety; old Fajen walnut stock that was trimmed and lightened.
Built it for my son years ago, have killed several deer with it myself, using Speer and Sierra 150gr bullets and now 125gr Hornadys.
Also have a 1903 US Rem sporter that I bought years ago for $225, that's thumped its fair share of whitetails and another one in the same serial number range, that's original but for the cut-off original stock. Then there's my dad's WWII bring back VZ 24, that's also original except for the stock.
Have killed deer with both.
If three or more people think you're a dimwit, chances are at least one of them is right.

I shot my buck w/ my Smith-Corona Springfield 1903-A3: Loaded w/ 180 gr round-nosed Interlocks and topped with Williams' most open apperture I'm confident to kill anything in the lower 48 within 150 yards.

I have a 1935 98 Mauser that I rebarreled to 6.5X55 with a short chambered barrel. I put a timney trigger and model 70 style safty on it and a reshaped sporter stock. I had a little help with lowering the bolt handle and drilling the receiver for scope mounts, but this rifle is the last of my 1970's Mausers that will get the "Bubba" treatment. I'm happy with it!

I love it,he probably loded it onto the roof of a 1988 toyota corolla or some such to get it home too, nuthing like bringin home the bacon, er elk po' boy style. I hunt with a bubba'd $49.00 turkish mauser, and have thought about just taking my favorite kitchen knife w/ me for the afterwards chores, heck I even drove my old 92 toyota tercel to elk hunting a couple of years ago(when gas was nearly $4.00/gallon)my knapsack is an old drawstring kid's bookbag I picked up at the Sally store a few yrs ago.
