I picked up a 99C in a 284 winchester a few months back, trying to find some info about it. The gun is 99% looks like it s was hardly used... I paid 600 dollars for it... So onto the questions when did Savage stop chambering the 284... Where can I find spare magazines for it as well. Did I do alright as far as the price and what are these things going for, these days. While on leave I went moose hunting and I shot a big bull using 160gr hot core bullets with it... When I was 11 my dad bought me my 1st rifle and it was a 99 in a 243 have no idea what the model it was all I remember it had the brass counter and safety was on the lever... I would love to find another one just because... That rifle was something else.. Anyhow thanks for anyhelp you can provide...

John

They stopped chambering it in 284 in 1973.

Ya, you did good on the price, I paid $550 for mine and it had been reblued.

Be tough finding a pre-mil 243 again. They're snatched up pretty quick, especially by the guys around here.

You did real well on the price, .284's are rare and usually go for 50% or more than you paid, depending on condition. As for spare magazines for the .284, well they are where you find them.

You could start by putting out a general request here and see what pops up.

I have a 99C in .243 that I purchased new in 1974....pretty much mint condition or at least 99% mint.......is it worth much.

Thanks,
Bob

Not a bunch, though the 243's are pretty popular. Between $500 and $800 at a guess if sold on an auction site..
