Hi Guys, I saw a thread that I cannot find now by doing a search, and it was on how to shim a tang to prevent stock splits. Does anyone have a link to that one?

Also, I have noticed several 99 EG buttstocks that have small chips at the buttplate edge due to the shape of the metal buttplate. I notice that the (pressed?) buttplates have a rather pointed underside edge along the perimeter, and it will chip the contact edges of the stock. Does anyone have a fix for this since I plan to shoot my guns? I was thinking that waxing the heck out of the wood and putting some glass bedding under the metal would spread out the load and prevent chips. Likewise, maybe a thin fender washer would put the load on the screw bosses instead of the edge of the buttplate? Maybe some sort of shim underneath, leaving a few thousandths gap between the plate and the wood?

Many thanks for any advice folks. Y'all are the best. God Bless, Marc

Here's a good writeup on tang crack prevention:

As to protecting the toe of the buttstock.. I think that boils down to making sure there is good wood to metal fit, and not dropping or slamming the buttstock.

Calhoun, Is the edge chipping due to drops only, and not to recoil? If the metal fits the wood, you are saying that the chips come from a fall or drop? Many thanks, and God Bless, Marc

That would be my guess, unless the buttplate is an exceptionally bad fit. Never say never though..
