When Obama intered the room for his speach. They stood, clapped and cheered. When I was in service any time an officer entered the room you went to attention, let alone the Commander in Chief.

They're Corps of Cadets, they're still civilians. They don't receive a commission until graduation.

I noticed at the beginning, they did stand at attention.
But they did as they were instructed according to protocol. BTW, Chris Matthews apologized for what he said last night today on his show. IT was uncalled for and disrespectful to the cadets.

Hussein was disrespectful to the cadets by being there. I second that comment. Paul B.

Most likely - the cadets, that soon into their military training, could already see the half assed way Obama was going.

With all due respect to some of the previous posters, the Corps of Cadets will treat the President of the United States with the utmost of respect, because they are trained to do so, and because that is the right thing to do. The USMA considers itself to be the repository of the values of the Army and all that it stands for -- Duty, Honor, Country. I can assure you they were adhering to protocol. Professional soldiers leave partisanship at the door, and I am sure that is what 99% of the cadets would do. The other 1% would soon be walking area tours if their infractions were noticed...

That's right. I am left with the impression that some posters were never in the miliatry, either that or forgot how it works.
If cadets showed disrespect, first, the commander of West Point would be relieved, and repercussions would be felt all throught the chain of command.
I think some are guilty of projecting their own views here. It's just plain dumb.

They're Corps of Cadets, they're still civilians. They don't receive a commission until graduation. I was stationed at West Point in the fall of 1968 with the 50th Engineers. At that time we were informed that Cadets outranked enlisted military but were outranked by Warrant Officers and Commissioned Officers.

I worked directly for a couple GM-13's when I was active duty. They "outranked" me, but were most assuredly civilians. I'm sure they want the Cadets feeling like future leaders from the start, but I find it hard to believe if in actuality one could issue a lawful order to an NCO, when one has yet to receive their commission. Why pointing out their lack of commission originally though, was to point out that they may not have the same protocols as enlisted or officers and thus may not be required to stand at attention for the POTUS.

I noticed the cadets and the uniformed personnel I assume are cadre, seemed a bit slack, and slouchy.
I was kinda wondering if that was the normal level of military presence around West Point or if it was prescribed for the occasion.

Shane I noticed it wasn't 8th and I either. But that was people showing what they thought while still technically following protocol.
Like I said - every enlisted/officer/WO guy knows how to follow the letter but not the spirit of how it's done...

I'm thinking the entire Corps of Cadets performed exactly as briefed.
