Went to staples a while ago to pick up a new printer cartridge and some misc. stuff.
1. I asked where the wood pencils were because I couldn't find them. Our staple store doesn't carry wood pencils anymore, only mechanical pencils. Guy said there was no demand for regular No.2 pencils anymore.....ok in a town that they are the only office supply place and a college of 15k kids who take nearly every test with a No.2 pencil there is no demand.
So anyway when I go to check out the girl said she can't check me out. So I ask can she get someone. She says they don't have anyone.
So I ask for a manager and she says it will be about 30 minutes before the person that can check out comes back.
I was like so your open and have 15 employees in here but can't sell anything. She says I don't understand how their scheduling works....I told her she was dead on there.
How can places like that stay in business?
That's my rant for today but I seem to run into it weekly at least around here. I don't know if it's a sign of the times or just where I'm living now. Employees and managers seem to have no connection between taking money at the cash register and keeping their job.

The pencil thing just seems odd. The not being able to sell anything for thirty minutes is just plain nuts. You have to wonder what their corporate office would have to say about this.

There seem to be alot of people that don't grasp that as an employee their purpose is to make a profit for their employer. If they are unable to provide that task, they should expect to either be looking for a job where they can make an employer a proffit, or they should expect to either be laid off, or see their company close their doors.

My whole career has been based on commission or production based incentives. Commensurate with results is what I believe my first Sales Manager called it. Everyone should have to experience that pay structure at least once in their lives. Especially, young folk! Nowadays you have to poke them with a cattle prod. Not all of them mind you but enough to be concerned with.

It's enough to make you wonder if this country is even worth saving...except for the good ones that have been raised right and know how to work.

The only office supply store in town are the key words. Well Wal Mart had pencils when I went over there. Of course they're made out of glue/recycled wood and suck ass but they are real pencils. On the flip side staples had about 11 different models of electric pencil sharpeners.

The must have a "green" person doing their ordering.. Yes..Most young people can't process more than one simple thing (or do one simple task) at a time.. Whatever happened to multi tasking?

work ethic aint completely dead in the youngin's....my baby brother is 19 and like me can be taught to do bout anything real quick.....unless he is helping a friend he wont work for less than $10 an hour, not cause he thinks he is entitled but cause he has learned he doesnt have trouble finding someone to pay him that even here in a county with some of the highest unemployment in the state....the boy is a hair short of 6'2" and 270 pounds most of which is muscle and you can work him like a rented mule.....
we got the bid to supply the local pre K-12 school district with copy paper this year, basically a whole semi load that had to be broke down and delivered to the schools one hand cart load at a time.....due to stuff going on i could only help for bout a day which got paper off the semi and arraigned at the shop and one of the smaller orders of paper delivered to one of the 4 buildings, Sam and one of his friends delivered the rest in a day and a half and by delivered i mean stacked where ever they wanted it in the buildings....20 some pallets placed onto a hand cart 4 high, loaded into a big U-Haul van we rented, and unloaded and sometimes stacked 7 high at the various buildings....
damndest thing was he usually wasnt totally beat at the end of the day though his only break was a hour lunch and getting to sit in the truck while driving it from the shop to the delivery spot and back.....a day of it damn near killed me, he was barely winded
i just wish i had enough work to keep the lil [bleep] employed by me full time.....the boy is part mule and will work damn near full bore of a 8 or even 12 hour shift and not b!tch to much unless you ask him to do something he believes is stupid....but if it makes seance he ill just get to it and not stop till he is done or its quitting time, whatever comes first.....

If I where the district manager she would have been on the street so fast it would make your spin. She should have checked you out herself.

If this keeps up much longer they will be short of all things in the store. It will be just like in old Mother Russia in the good ole days.

Pay better and you actually get thinking employees ! i get paid crap compared my skill cause i get paid for alot of down time....this last month i didnt do chit for printing when the month before i couldnt keep up.....i dont just do printing but its the main reason im there....couple years ago the wife asked me if i wanted to take up the ad route and that part of the business or she had some one interested in the job for 2 dollars more an hour than i was getting paid.....i said hire the other gal and leave me in the back....she asked if i had a problem making less than someone with a whole lot less skill than me...i said i dont want to do that job cause i aint a [bleep] people person, ill stay back in the shop rather pay someone else to do the major interfacing with the public cause i have a hard time not telling someone they are a idiot when they start annoying me.....
