You learn that "tailgunner" trick when you walk through a fresh snow with no tracks on it as you go into the stand site. Then when you return through that area on the way back 30 minutes later there are smoking hot coyote tracks crossing the ones you made on the way in... things that make you go hummmm!
Every normal man must be tempted, at times, to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats.
I want to put a Leupold VX-II 6-18x40mm Adj. Obj Scope on it. I haven't switched scopes yet because it shoots so good the way it is...and I haven't have the extra $500 or so to spend on it.
I'm far from the most experienced person when it comes to coyotes but I think you would be taking 2 steps backwards by swapping a 6-18x onto the gun. Thats alotta scope power for a critter that seems to magically pop out of nowhere 20yards away.
I'm going to leave the 3-10x44mm scope on it for now. This rifle has always been my "varmint rifle". If the coyote hunting works out, I'll probably have to set up a dedicated coyote rifle.
Take nothing I say personal, remember....it's just the interweb!
If you guys are allowed to do so in the non-Bloomberg controlled areas of your state, you might consider an accurate AR with a 1.5-5X or a 2.5-8X for a dedicated coyote carbine.
To purchase a Remmy VTR with the 24" barrel and no Muzzle Brake, you have to go to Cabelas. They have an exclusive deal with Remington. No one else can sell them!!!!
Remington 788 in .223. (55gr Nosler Balistic Tips in front of 26.5gr of Win 748) Timney Trigger set to 1.5lbs, Leupold 1.5X6-40 Scope, DuraCoat in Stripe Camo pattern. Glass bedded, free floated, receiver face trued, Bolt lapped. This may be the most accurate rifle I have ever owned. I bought it new in 1977 and it has killed mucho Mule Deer, Javalina, and countless coyotes and other varmints. Wouldn't part with it for any amount of money. I can build a shooter for you at http://centralazfireams.com
My coyote rifle is a Stevens model 200 in .223 Rem with a 4-12X40mm Leupold scope. It's shoots about 0.5-0.75 MOA with the right ammo. Just picked up a new shotgun for the close in stuff. It's a Mossberg Ulti-mag 12 ga 3 1/2".

This is what I'm using on windy days or really cold days when I'm wearing a lot of clothes and I want a gun with a shorter length of pull. My daughter's M7 in 257 roberts.
I started using the 243 winchester as a coyote rifle about 6 years back and have had nuttin but wonderful results on coyotes with the 243 as I suspect it will be my coyote rig for life....
