Local shop has a 6.5 Rem Mag in a Rem 673 with a bunch of ammo and a new Weaver 2-7x; looks interesting, and I don't own a Remington right now: so, what's the scoop on this caliber? I like the shark fin rib and I've shot 673's in 350 Rem Mag but have no experience with the 6.5.

Had a Model 600 6.5 to match a .350 RM I had. Was a very nice shooting gun without all the recoil of the .350. Biggest reason I sold it was I didn't like seating the heavier bullets deep and the 18.5" barrel just didn't produce the velocities that a good 22" tube would.

Indeed the 6.5 Rem. Mag. would be a lovely little gun as a short magnum with a 24 inch tube.
A small bore magnum with an 18.5 inch barrel is an abomation.
Reminton should know better. What a waste of performance.

Thought about one when you could get a SUCKS Shamu for next to nothing. 6.5/06 in a short action, can like that.

i have a spare SS Win Classic 7WSM with a marginal tube and a Hart 6.5, 1-8" barrel on the shelf. i'm thinking about doin' the 6.5 RM with a 21"-22" or so tube.

to me short mags should be in a short rifle. if not, why not go .264 WM

I once owned a M-660 in 6.5 Mag. To this day I rue the day I sold it. I now have a M-700 w/24" bbl and a M673 (sans rib) w/22" bbl. Being a self admitted 6.5 slut, I like them both, but I sure wish I had the 660 back. It haunts me to this day, and I still can recite the serial #. If I ever find it, it will come home... smile

BTW... No deer ever complained about the deep seated bullets...

I think it would make a dandy rifle for elk and deer.

OK, you will give up some velocity due to the short barrel. Big deal. You also get a short, very handy rifle. Let's say you only get 2950fps with a Sciocco 130g bullet - it is still carrying over 2000fps and 1200fpe at 600 yards. And it carries 1500fpe out to 445 yards with nearly 2300fps.

If you like it, I'd grab it.

If the price is right, buy it. I shoot the 6.5-06 on a regular basis and picked up a 6.5 in the 673 on a closeout a few years ago. I jerked the rib and fin sight off, mounted a scope and shot some impressive groups with 125 grain partitions. The chronograph tells me the two inches less barrel doesn't mean a whole lot between the two calibers and it is one handy rig here in the brush.

There certainly isn't a deer that can tell the difference between them. In fact, I liked the performance of the cartridge so much that I bought a dirt cheap old beatup 700 in 7mm mag to rebarrel to 6.5 Remington Magnum. I made the fatal mistake of shooting the donor and never did replace that old stainless steel tube from the early '60's. The thing has shot everything fed it into small groups. It is currently one of my son's favorite rifles and last year accounted for his biggest mule deer ever out west. The only thing he did to the rifle was bed the barreled action into a CDL stock. After that was done, it still shot the same tiny groups.

It seems to me that I encountered a Remington 40X in
6.5RM at a gunshow once, probably a custom rebarrel.

I have 6.5RM barrel for my M-16 SA Savage, which I haven't mounted or loaded for yet.The rifle is a 260,right now.The Savage mag is about 2.94 or so. As a 6.5RM,it's going to be a bad weather mule deer rifle.

So, what's the good weather mule deer rifle? It seems you now have a 6.5 for every occasion though I'm not sure you have the heavy timber blacktail base covered;) GD

I have one in a Rem 660 and love it. I have shot a lot of deer and a few antelope with it. They should do well on elk with a good bullet.

Oregon, Buy it. Thats an nice rig and the 6.5 is a great caliber. The 673 has a 22" barrel and they shoot like a house going up in flames. You can seat the bullets out far enough not to use up all the powder space with one because the throats and mags. are longer than the old days. I have one and also a .350. Both shoot great. Ignore the rib and shark fin. The only problem with mine is that the factory triggers on these suck. They are about 200 pounds. Snap that one a couple of times and see if it's better. Maybe by getting it used someone has already fixed the trigger. The Weaver 2x7 is a nice scope too. How much if I might ask? Thanks, DeWayne

Greydog,I do have that covered as well, that same Savage as a 260 is light, handy, and not easily rusted.Though the classic stock could be quicker handling. I don't think I would ever get a chance to use a fair weather blacktail 6.5mm. here on the coast.

I have a 6.5 rem mag rebarrel with a 26" Douglas and it will push a 140 gr bullet between 3000 fps and 3100 fps all day and a 130 gr bullet at 3100 fps + with no pressure signs and multiple case reloadings. Great little cartridge and not the big boom or hassle of the 264 win mag. Most of my loadings are 57 to 60 gr RL22 and RL25 so it is an efficient case size to bore chambering.

I have two 6.5 Rem Mags one in a 20" 660 and the other in a flatbolt 22" Ruger 77. Great caliber. My 660 has a one shot string on caribou that I have lost count over. The gun writers of the time didn't understand the concept of short magnum and killed it with bad press that was mostly silly. Run the consequences of deep seating skinny little 6.5 bullets into a ballistics calculator and you lose maybe 25 ft/sec. The short barrels do give up some steam as in a long barrel this caliber comes close to matching the 264 Win Mag. However in 20" guise it's as handy as can be and matches 270 ballistics. The 22" gets 70-90 extra feet/sec and is an entirely useful package.

i have a 673 in a 6.5 and its a tack driver, it really likes the 120gr tsx and the 130gr nosler accubond. i load mine up with the heaviest loads that the new nosler manual has listed and they shoot small groups at 100yds.

I like the idea of building the performance of my 6.5-'06 into a short-action carbine for hunting. I pestered Ruger to build a 6.5 RCM, I guess I will just have to hunt with the .300 RCM for now (a .30-'06 Improved equivalent) and build a 6.5 Rem Mag.

I have one and like it a lot and I'm a Winchester man. It's easy on the soldier and I am very happy with it.
