Shot my 1974 Marlin Model 1895 for the first time today. Shot great, cycled horribly. The round goes almost half way into the chamber, stops, and if I relax and then close the lever, it slides right. Not always, but most of the time unless I lever it really fast. I don't want to have to worry about this in the woods, especally in Alaska this summer.

Using Remington 300 gr. jhp ammo(the kind with the "crimp") about where the bullet ends in the case.

Anyone famliar with this situation.

Thanks, Gator1

My first gude gun did the same thing. I ended up cycling the action hundreds (if not 1000's) of times with no ammo in the gun. I did this over a period of days and weeks. I switched from Federal factory ammo to handloads and the problem went away.

Cycling the action repeatedly will really help smooth things out.

I guess I should have asked if your gun is new or used

GATOR1, it is "the nature of the beast," that Marlin lever actions must be "levered fast," to prevent a jam. Also, there is an endemic problem with many Marlins, especially those in the pistol calibers, called the famous "Marlin jam." Not too unusual with the .45-70 & .444, either.

If you go to the marlinowners.com website, you'll read all about it, and will get some suggestions as to how to cure it.

I would just ship the rifle back to Marlin and have them fix it. One of my Marlins is on its way TODAY, back to the factory because of the "Marlin jam," with all kinds of ammo, factory and reloads.

Good luck. L.W.

My 1981 '95 does this too. I thas not been used much so it is still breaking in. The cartridge lifter works fine but the rear of the cartridge (the rim) kind of hangs up a little on the inside of the action when cycling. If I cycle the action fast it works OK. Slowly and I have to work the lever a little harder. I am hoping time and use will slick it up. It sure isn't as slick as my 336 30/30.
