I was wondering if anybody has used one of the alpen apex scopes, and if so what did you think about it? I need a scope for one of my 220 swifts that is coming back with a new barrel, and was thinking about trying one as I love my apex binoculars that I use. I am torn between this and an elite 4200. Does anybody have any input?

Alpen does make some decent binocs.. but their rifle scopes are not in the same league overall.

I have owned both.

By all means get the Bushnell.

Even the best Alpen models do not really compare to the 4200s.

I had an Alpen 3.5-10 and it was heavy, of mediocre optical quality and did not hold zero.

Except for the weight, a Bushnell 4200 would blow it out of the water..

jim62,
Thanks, you are the second person that has told me to avoid the alpen scopes. I already have several elites, so I guess it would be best to stick with what I know will work well. Thanks again

J,

You will find that all things considered, the 4200s are hard to beat for the money spent.

The are excellent scopes.

When considering Alpen, many people pick up one of the "Kodiak" line, think that's representative of Alpen scopes, and then tell everyone what they think of the Alpen line based on that low-end product. The Apex is much better than the Kodiak. I have one Apex, a 3-9x42, and my next scope purchase will probably be an Alpen Apex.

For the life of me, I can't figure out why a company produces an "entry level" product (in this case the Kodiak) which gets lots of attention because of price, and lets everyone judge the whole line by that low-end product.

I also have a couple of pairs of Alpen Apex binoculars, 8.5x50 and 8x42. I carried the 8x42 every day of deer season. No disappointments right up until quitting time.

I've compared the Apex and the 4200's side by side..

Optically it's not contest, the Bushnell wins.. And, that is as it should be- the 4200s are about $75-100 more than the Apex scopes model for model..

They are comparable to Bushnell's 3200 series.
