Gents:
Been driving 1995 Dodge w/Cummins since new and it is getting pretty ratty.
Need suggestions, please.
Am looking for something about 10 years newer to drive for a few years hoping we get something going here in the States, like those small Toyotos pick-ups with diesels I saw in SA. Need one of those...
Was looking at a Jeep Cherokee and thought that would work if a guy pulled out the back seats for gear or deer.
Something with 4-wheel for offroad and still get 20mph highway...and look good enough so that my clients don't offer to buy me lunch...or ask what my wife is doing this weekend...:)

my next truck will be a half ton crew cab 4x4 with the longest cargo bed available.
Right now that looks like the f150 supercrew with 6.5' bed.

Dave, I don't show her this site...and I hope she is doing me this weekend...:)
Moneywise I was thinking in the 10-12k area...
I don't care about who made it--not fussy. No flys on Toyota or Honda. I'd buy a truck from the Ruskies if it did better than 20mph...mine got 20mph in 1995 and nothing has changed but the price!
Would probably pull the back seat anyway out of an SUV type thing like the Cherokee--need gear room...or a place to sleep...:) Kids are grown up and the dog has his own car.
I just mentioned the Cherokee because a girl working out of here claims she get 20 highway...

I don't think it's real hard to get "20 hwy" with a lot of rigs.
Guess you need to figure how much cab vs cold cargo type room you need first.
that'll help you lay down dome direction as to truck vs suv.
I need both that's why I like the crew cab pickups. I haul people and big bloody dead critters and engines and firewood and lumber and ATV's, fish, blah-blah-blah.

just curious, you obviously had your cummins prior to ULSD (our new fuel)
How's your 96 cummins like this new dry juice? See your mpg drop any?

Dave I don't know. It has 350k on it.
If I am flat out on the interstate, I still pull 20 but any variation drops it down, even on a long run. My best used to be 22 when it was a pup.
I'd guess 2mgh less anyway, but was thinking (and I don't know squat)that if may be my ejectors getting tired.

350k wow.
Yeah I'd say the cummins has been good to you.
Personally I'm getting away from the diesel scene until I'm sure the engine builders can achieve ro regain the bulletproof endurance that those mid 90's engines had & still comply with the new emission standards.
That's a lot to ask of any engine builder, tall order.
I think I'm going back to gas for a while, sit on the sidelines & see how the diesel thing pans out under these new emissions standards.

Ditto, sort of.
Just looking for a decent looking, higher milage, hunting/traveling rig to get by for a few years. We are bound to see something interesting (here in the US) in the next few years--like that Cummins was in the early 90's.

I agree.
I wish the big 3 & others would figure out that most of us buyers really arent in a HP contest with our friends. Most of us would much rather buy engines that hold together & generate adequate amounts of power (I don't need 500HP personally) .
Just give us sound, trouble free engines.
Let the HP freaks mod their trucks out & billow black smoke, blow their cylinder heads off etc. The ones that really want all that power are just going to mod out what ever an OEM sells them anyways.
Give the rest of us a good engine with priority 1 on dependability.

Don't think it could be said much better than that Dave. Not really a bells and whistles guy, and they seem to fill most rigs with those now too. They seem to be the first things that start to rattle, vibrate, and buzz when the truck hits 50,000 miles too. with that...I do like the heated seat part of the bells and whistles.
