I'm kind of a 7X57 fan here Tom....have it in a Ruger 1A, a 700 Mountain Rifle and a JP Sauer sporter. Both it and the Swede have a "cool factor" all their own. +a BUNCH!!! Ingwe

If this gets really painful for you, I'd ship it to Lee and tell him to surprise you. I already tried to pimp him...he left it up to me.

i would pick the swede. i load nosler BT's in 100 grain with 42.5 grains of Varget and shoot tiny little groups at 3200 fps. marvelous deer medicine. or you could get a 140 grain bullet moving 2800 or a little more...plow right through every time. and do either one with a soft report and a gentle push on your shoulder.

Since you mention it is a long action (.30-06) now: .25-06 .270 Win
This year I saw a 6x6 bull elk, cow elk and 4x4 mulie buck that had been taken with a .25-06. The bull took two shots but the second was probably unnecessary (both good chest hits). The shooter was a 12 year old girl from Michigan. She didn't mind the recoil.

No, I'm not a Ruger bigot - just an unabashed fan of their revolvers, M77's and #1's.
A good .30-06 is a 99% solution.

All three mentioned are good, really good cartriges for deer. My personal favorite would be the Swede but there is a lot to be said for the nice old gentleman 7X57. That is if you handload. If you only intend to use factory stuff be aware that US 7X57 are woefully underloaded in defference to the many old Spanish 93 Mausers still hanging around. Same deal as with the 8X57 mauser. To a lesser extent that holds true for the Swede too. Plenty of M38 96action rifles exist.

Thanks guys.
I'm leaning HARD towards the Swede. I'm surprised how many of you guys use it.

Sounds like not only wisdom, but class too.
I kinda like the "...deer only." in your post.
I asked a similar question sometime ago to some fellas on another forum (out of Alaska), and it's interesting when you look for a specific cartridge catagory, such as "Deer Only."
So much is geared for "Deer, and....." I realize that the Europeans use the Swede as a primary Moose cartridge, but that detracts little from it being a very good choice for your given purposes.

For the cool factor and to be different, go with the 6.5-06 a little faster then the swede and will do what you are asking of it out to 300+

.243 bro light reciol 2900+ fps/ 700 ft lbs @ 500 yrds.what else could you ask for in a deer rifle and it will knock an elk down with proper shot placement , plus you can get ammo just about anywhere and realodaings cheap cuase it dosnt take that much powder.

I agree, a 243 is more than adequate for deer, if you want a little more, then opt for the 260
