None of the CRF's are bomb proof, if you have quite a few of them run some shells through them slowly and see what happens. A lot of them won't grab on until the shell is all the way up in the raceway. This goes for any manufacturer. True. The most 'controlled' CRF action I've had would be. CZ550/22-250, Kimber Montana/338WM(once I bent the claw in slightly), Ruger HE/338WM, & Pre-64 M70/308Win. I have had a 'classic' M70's in 270WSM & 300WSM. These rounds did not snap up like the former. The very best was the 22-250 CZ & 338WM Montana. These two snapped under the claw fairly early & were very secure. I could not even shake em out! My CRF 308Win Kimber Montana was not the same here but I did get one of the very early runs. That rifle had feed issues. Yup, so I'm over all this CRF Vs PF as well Go with which suits your $$$ & shoulder best. Good luck.

I have a Remmie 700 CDL 35 Whelen with a Leupold 1.5-5 on top. A nice setup. A poor guy's Winchester super grade. If I was buying one today I'd get a stainless Ruger Hawkeye.

SLDUCK: I have three firends with Remington 700's in caliber 35 Whelen - they are all VERY pleased with them. I have watched two of these guys shoot Bull Elk with their Rifles in fact. All three of these Hunters rave about the accuracy they get with their 35 Whelen Remingtons. I can't add any info on the Rugers in caliber 35 Whelen as I have never seen one in action. Best of luck with whichever you choose. Hold into the wind VarmintGuy

i've got rugers and m700s. if your hunting dangerous game and might be shooting upside down while swinging from a tree limb, get a crf. if your going for accuracy, get a push feed. either would be fine for an elk hunter imo.

The only problem I have with my Grice Rem CDL 35 Whelen- And I mean the only problem is that the blasted thing doesn't fit me right. I have to put a slip on pad on top of the R3 factory pad.
I love the smooth as butter action, even without the CRF. The blueing is really a deep blue satin instead of the graphite grey I don't care for on the Ruger Hawkeye (358w). Fit and finish in the Rem is outstanding right out of the box. It looks like it was magically poured into a mold instead of assembled from separate parts.
Pretty much most of the things that my Hawkeye isn't, out of the box. But if I had it to do again, I'd probably get the Ruger and not look back.

The tang safety 77's had a plunger ejector and a fully recessed bolt face. Removing the bottom lip of the bolt face will not make them a CRF. The case would stop rising when it hit the ejector.
Early 77MKII's had a blade ejector and a fully recessed bolt face, making it a PF.
Later 77MKII's had the lip removed, making them CRF. This can be done to the early 77MKII's, converting them to CRF.

I did not intend to hijack this thread into a PF vs. CRF debate. I own both. Both can work well, and both have the potential to NOT work well. My M700 mountain 7x57 feeds slick as butter. OTOH, I had a PF Ruger M77 in 338 mag that was miserable! Every round would pop up too high from the magazine and jam the bolt. I also had a Remington M7 in 260 that did the same thing. When they work right, both designs are a thing of beauty.

I think the Ruger is what I am looking for. I like the 3 position safety better. I just wish they would come with the Ruger nabded front site and a set of irons.

Ruger had a Special Edition .35 Whelen run that was blue with a canoe paddle stock and sights about 10 years ago. Unfortunately, a number of them had misfiring issues, which included the one that I bought. So, I rebarreled mine put the sights back on it and used a Hawkeye synthetic stock for a handle. In the following picture, it is a Hogue stock. CP.

I'd buy the 700 and wrap a Ti take off around it, and cut it to 23"...grin

No experience with the Rugers, so I won't comment on them.
I shoot a Rem 700 CDL Whelen and absolutely love it. It functions perfect and shoots under an inch for me. It has had the trigger adjusted and nothing more.

Just a heads up: Ruger is no longer showing the Hawkeye in .35 Whelen on their web site. So, if you've found one in a store you better grab it quick if you decide you want the Ruger. -Bob F.

Its a blonde vs. redhead thing. Both make fine products, but I much prefer Rugers. Course, I like redheads too...grins

If I had chose between a Remington and a Ruger I would go with the Ruger. And if I had chose between a .35 Whelen and a 9.3x62, I would go with 9.3x62. Why, because you can use a heavier bullet.

I own a Remington 700 Classic and have killed more than a few deer with it. IMHO, I think if I was buying another Whelen, I'd buy a Remington. Ruger doesn't make a semi-auto Whelen and I really like the look and feel of a Whelen 750 Carbine. Talk about a timber thumper.
I don't drink or Smoke. I spend my money on gunpowder and gasoline.
