Finished up our annual youth deer hunt on the refuge I work on. Had 25 youngsters, age 12 - 14 out for a 1 1/2 day hunt. They bagged 37 antlerless on the first afternoon, and another 11 the next day. Lots of happy kids!

We're way overpopulated with deer, and buck to doe ratios are usually about 1:12 or so.

Always interesting to note what they're shooting. This year we had:

.222 - 1,

.223 - 1,

.243 - 12,

.270 - 5,

.280 - 1,

.30-30 - 5,

.308 - 1,

.30-06 - 3.

Now to get ready for the Adult hunt that starts on Wednesday...

Congrats to the kids!(and to you for "making it happen" for them). Now that's conservation at it's best; letting them take some doe(s) and enjoy the "good life" while decreasing the doe population!(sounds like it was needed as well)..

Some notes from a TSRA youth hunt last weekend.

.22/250- 1

.243 - 3

.257 Roberts- 1

.308- 1

Hunters ranged from 11 to 17. Of this group, all got their deer on hunt held west of Mountian Home, Texas.

A couple of notes from our half of the group:

All shots were with in 120 yards.

A 70 grain ballistic tip from a .243 kills deer and ruins a lot of meat. 100 grain bullets damaged far less meat and killed as quickly.

The 22/250 (55 grain PSP) required an organized search for a dead animal with a good no-exit-wound, hit which left no blood trail. When dressed the heart on this animal had been destroyed and it still made 100 yards leaving no blood trail.

The .308 (150 grain WW Powerpoint) and the .257 (100 grain Nosler Partifion) produced the least meat damage and had tracking been necessary would have produced trackable blood trails.

This was a geat hunt for these first time hunters. If you are in Texas--sign up to support the Texas Rifle Assocation as they are working to bring hunters in to the fold--it is a worthy effort.
