i am the one who got the screamin deal on a 264 win mag here, and in the pics sent to me the receiver looks to be a matte finish and the barrel shiny ? it's still original and the seller says first 3 of the serial number is in the 700 range. still using pre 64 finishing set up ?

It is most definitely defective. I can't stand to see you get hurt on the deal. I will take it off your hands for $325.00 so that you are made whole again. Grins.
Don't have any idea as to your question though. You will LOVE the caliber.

In 1939 Winchester switched from the difficult and expensive carbonum bluing process to a cheaper black oxide finish which was then sandblasted.

You have a very early post 64 Model, and as mentioned, that's how they were made. Yours looks to be in outstanding shape. I had one just like it and sold it, still mad at myself. It was a tack driver.
The 264 is a fun cartridge, but you really need to be a reloader to get the potential out of it. There are only 2 factory loads available, and they perform about like a 270 (which ain't too shabby!)

the dies aren't my first choice, but hey, he thru them in on the deal.

so i get, it's that's the way they were made. but why, 2 different places, or ?? still from the pre 64 process ? hoping for a decent long torpedo bullet for some distance shooting. don't think it'll do anything more than my 257 whby can. but it looks like it's faster than a 6.5x284.

Two different grades of steel treated with the same process perhaps?
Dude that is a pimpin' classic rig.
Out beyond 400 it'll do better than a 257 Roy because of the projectile's significantly higher BC (depending of course upon what bullets you're loading).

Here is my far newer 30-06 Classic BOSS. Same finish. Just check the throat and buy it. Stuff it with 120 or 130 TSXs and it will kill anything in the lower 48.

It was cheaper and easier to sandblast the receiver than to polish it. On the barrel, the reverse was true. Later, it was decided topolish the receivers. Sadly, the polishing was usually poorly done resulting in uneven, misaligned surfaces. GD

The two tone finish IMO looks a lot better than the new ones that look more like licorish or a saturday night special..The old pre 64 finish is pretty popular with custom rifles also..
It had nothing to do with production, it was stylish and still is to some..Personally I really like it. Those actions are polished with attention paid to square cornors no washed out screw holes etc. then when they passed inspection they were bead blasted, passed inspection and then sent to the bluer..or so I am told.

Randy, my point was even the "last of the classics" still have that finish.
